Barrera-Chavez not set!
Wednesday, January 11 2006
Despite information to the contrary on the HBO website, WBC super featherweight champ Marco Antonio Barrera is NOT definite to move up in weight to face Jesus Chavez for the IBF lightweight title on March 25th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. According to Golden Boy Promotions, Barrera's decision will depend upon the outcome of the January 21st fight between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales, who are battling for a WBC international super featherweight title and an eliminator for the WBC super featherweight title (which is held by Barrera). Golden Boy did confirm that Barrera will fight on March 25th (on HBO) and that Chavez is one of many opponents that is under consideration. A move up to the lightweight division (135 pound limit) will represent a significant career milestone for 5' 6" Barrera who began his career as a flyweight (112 pound limit) over sixteen years ago. On the other side of the ring, the 5' 8" Morales fought the first seven years of his career as a super bantamweight (122 pound limit) while the 5' 6 1/2" Pacquiao bounced around from the junior flyweight (108 pound limit) to the bantamweight divisions (118 pound limit) in his first five years as a pro.---Flattop
Style-wise PAC is a nightmare to Barrera. Consider this, both are sluggers BUT...
PAC is quicker, faster, has more stamina, faster handspeed, stronger punches and that southpaw stance is a nightmare for any slugger.
This is probably the main reason why Barrera has been avoiding PAC all these years, because he knows he can't win.
i here what ya sayin bro but its like barrera has never ducked a challenge before and this for me is his biggest challenge out there in pacman. i honestly dont think barrea is scared i mean he lost to junior jones by KO and came right back to fight him, he lost to morales and fought him 2 more times after that so i dont think barrera is scared, i just think its more of mental thing. Barerra got destroyed that night he fought pacman, a lot of people had barrera near the top of the P4P list, he was seen as the king of the featherweights at 126lbs and pacman just comes along and phycologically opened up that division with his one sided beatin of barrera.
thats the ONLY fight ive seen barrera not want to fight, from round 8 or 9, its like he knew he couldnt win the fight, pacman took his heart that day. the thing is, i honestly think barrera has a chance to beat pacman, i mean if you watch the first 2 rounds of their fight, barrera had a good game plan, kept pacman on the outside with his jabs and countered with his right hand, after he got knocked down in the 3rd round he just got more cautious, its like he didnt wanna risk gettin knocked down again.
even if barrera loses a rematch to pacquiao, i think he will get more respect because he has a least tried to avenge it, rather than avoiding him.
barrera needs to fight pacquiao before he retires. i mean that will always be a question mark on barreras career if he dont at least try and avenge that defeat.
maybe barreras lookin at it from this perspective.....
if morales wins, then he will move up and fight chavez, if pacquiao wins, then barrera will stay at 130lbs and fight pacquiao, this is the only reason i can think of barrera waiting for the outcome from the morales vs pacquiao fight.
i dont think barrera will have a problem making the lightweight 135lbs limit, ive seen him weigh in at 122lbs when he was a bantamweight/junior featherweight but on fight night he was walkin around at 135lbs, this was for fights against mckinney, tapia, hamed and some other fights. the only worry for him would be the extra weight he might have to put on a day after because chavez would be perhaps walkin around on fight night at 140-145lbs. but barrera has shown in the past he can beat bigger guys, morales vs barrera 3 was an example of that, morales weiged over 10lbs more than barrera on fight night and barrera still beat him.
i just hope barrera aint gettin complacent near the end of his career, i mean before fighting pacman, he fought tapia and kevin kelly and these fighters did not test him at all and when he fought pacman he just got blown away (some of it were down to distractions but it was also because of a good and hungry performance by pacman). barrera fought fana and peden who aint top top fighters so i hope he aint repeatin what he did the first time he fought pacquiao by fighting fighters that dont test him.
But you would think he might want a challenge before fighting Pacquiao. No disrespect to his last two opponents but they hardly pushed him, you would think he would want a hard one in order to get ready for Pacquiao
See, I’m a huge Barrera fan but I would have to agree, he has to fight Pacquiao. Now, I found this other article on Fightnews.com about a potential Barrera-Pacquiao 2:
Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez told Fightnews Wednesday that the proposed Marco Antonio Barrera-Jesus Chavez fight is a no go for now. "For the moment, it will not go," said Gomez. "We are waiting to see what happens in the Pacquiao-Morales. Mr. Marco Antonio Barrera told us he will let us know who he will choose to fight him." Gomez said Barrera is interested in the possibility of a rematch with Pacquiao. "If Pacquiao wins, we are willing to make the fight happen on March 25. But, if he wins and gets injured, we could wait for him an extra month or so," Gomez revealed.
Other names mentioned for Barrera are WBO champ Jorge Barrios and WBA champ Vicente Mosquera. "Marco said he would be honor to fight a great champion like Jorge Barrios," commented Gomez. "We want him to fight the best out there. Barrios is one of them, but we will support him in wanting revenge against Pacquiao." As for Mosquera, "We had talks with Don King about Vicente Mosquera, because he had a good showing in the United States. We had talks, but no offers." Barrera vs Chavez for Chavez IBF lightweight title still remains an option. "Marco told us he was willing to fight Jesus Chavez," Gomez said. "On the other hand, Marco feels the lightweight division is too heavy for him. With Chavez, he would be taking a great risk."
I'm not sure if I'm getting this right. If Pacquiao wins on January 21st, Marco would like to fight him on March 25th? He's gonna try to catch a tired Pacquiao or what?
Again I would agree with you. I would much rather see the B-P 2 then another Morales fight. Don’t get me wrong, I love those fights but 3 is enough. Win, lose or draw, Barerra has to fight Pacquiao.
If he retires without clearing this one up. Many people generations from now will label him as a coward who ducks fighters and fights noobs for easy money.
That's pretty much true. It's a shame, too....because he should be remembered as a great fighter, first.
He'll leave a huge question mark by not facing his conqueror.
That's one reason I'll root for Pacquiao over Morales....because if Morales wins, Barrera will probably face him again. I'd much rather see MAB-Pac II than MAB-Morales IV.

It's been over two years since MAB lost to Pacquiao.....
If MAB has no plans on facing the man who slaughtered him, & just dances around him with lesser foes...I'd rather see him retire.
Hi all,
I just have to say first that I’ve never replied to these discussions before, maybe I’m to nervous or whatever. But I was just on Maxboxing ( http://forums.********boxing.com/index.php?showtopic=38577 ) and they had this article about the future of the Barrera-Pacquiao fight and, I think, it provides some interesting information, does anyone want to comment?
I'd beg to differ. When Morales is sleeping in the canvas or bloodied and near collapse from PAC's blows, or if he still wins after what PAC dishes to him, then we return back here and say Morales is the better man.
But PAC gave his word that he will beat Morales thoroughly this time and has backed it up with the right training.
I admire Morales courage and I admit of the 3 mexicans, he's the only one with the balls and man enough to face PAC on even ground. It will be a very close fight. But once PAC starts landing those flushed to the body and chin, it will be a very painful night for Morales.
On even ground huh? Who do you think this weight favors Pac or Morales? Far from even ground, Pac is fighting into Morales territory, Morales might be tall enough to make that weight but we saw vs Rahim that he probably cannot seriously compete there. I think he's dragging Pac into deep water because he know that if they both move back down, Pac gets him.
It's great when Barrera and Morales fight, but it's the same again. I want to see new confrontations. I don't think any two boxers should fight more than three times and that's plenty. It should be two times and done.
