steves story
stevie became one of the best irish fighters ever. in his early days he won irish amateur titles as both a junior and a senior at both heavyweight and lightheavy, he was quite good at counterpunching but always seemed to be a brawler wanting to get out. he slugged his way to the irish amateur middleweight title of 1986. he went to boston to train with marvin haglers trainers, the petronellis, and counterpunched his way through the usa rankings into world middleweight challenger. he used to starve himself to make 160 pounds, and was willing to have sparring wars every day. he was good at grabbing the middle of the ring, good at planting his feet and good at getting inside. after just 16 fights he gave a prime mike mccallum an epic battle in 1990 over 12 rounds, every single round was very close, infighting battle but 9 of the 12 were edged by the far more experienced mccallum.
steve was robbed against both reggie johnson and sambu kalambay backtoback, in their backyards, and looked set for journeyman status. however out of the blue he stepped in as late replacement for ray close to tackle unbeaten eccentric chris eubank, despite having a terrible time trying to make weight collins found his fame and fortune in a legendary night for irish boxing in cork. collins famously fooled eubank and the world into believing he was hypnotised and took away eubanks '0' with one of the greatest examples of determination in boxing history.
collins was no longer the tough and awkward boxhitter/counterpuncher by 95, instead he dropped his guard and became a fully aggressive press fighter who relied on his chin and durability to wear away opponents, he also added body punching to his armoury and was looking unstoppable now. he outpointed eubank again six months later in a classic display of how to wear a opponent away with body punching from the very start and press fighting throughout. he proved himself beyond doubt by systematically taking apart nigel benn twice, benn was a boy in collins hands, those two wins against benn were what first launched trainer freddie roach.
the twoweight world champion collins beat eubank and benn twice each and was notoriously ducked by roy jones, cementing steves status as the best supermiddleweight of alltime. steve collins will always be remembered as one of the toughest mothers to spit in a bucket.
what was it like to lose to Sumbu Kalambay, the guy michael nunn koed in
round 1 ? do you think you won that fight ?
i posted this on the other steve collins thread
the celtic warrior retired as undefeated world champion. give him his dues. it is only speculation saying roy jones would of beat him, why didnt roy fight him and prove it then.
if steve fought james toney it would of been 12 rounds in a phone booth, with steves superior work ethic winning him the fight for sure. one of steves great strengths was having the last word in exchanges. if steve little could outhussle nunn then im sure steve collins could do it to nunn too. benn was drisgraceful against collins, quitting twice. he didnt have the heart to stay with collins for 12 rounds, he was a fake. he never would of beaten steve, he couldnt hurt steve, benn swung and swung but steve kept on coming and benn folded, it would of been the same in any year. as for eubank, eubank was unbeaten world champion and 28 year old when collins beat him, what more do you want. do you want collins to beat him again to prove it was no fluke, well that is exactly what happend. thank you
"If" doesnt count.
Can steve Collins explain why he deprived Joe Calzaghe his own scalp. He was supposed to fight Calzaghe and pulled out at last minute. from what i hear Howard Eastman knock him silly in sparring and he decided to call it quits
That is one of the reason people don't say of collins would have beaten Jones ?
As for the Benn fight let put it this way do u think Collins would have stopped McCllean ?
I hope u don't think I am rude of what i am asking if so change the wording around please I am very cuirous
and does he think Calzaghe will beat Lacy (the only fighter looking to entertain fans at super-middleweight)`
Ask Steve what he would do with James Toneys superior defense, handspeed, and counter-punching? Ask him how he'd get the angles to score on Toney, seeing as how James possessed every punch in the book and could really punish his opponents at lower weights.
I can answer that one, cabron.
He would have cried like a little bitch.
same thing if he could pick a boxer to fight from today and before he fought who would he pick ? and what would he do to win ? and what fighters would he have a hard time with if any ?

He'd of almost certainly lost wide UD's to Eubank-Benn-Nunn-Toney in 92-93-94, let alone Jones Jr. I mean he Did lose to Eubank in 95, and Benn was a joke post-McClellan compared to his former self (just watch the Nardiello and Perez fights where he actually performs worse than he did in both Collins fights).
You are JUYJUY...
He'd of been easily beaten on the cards by Eubank-Benn-Nunn-Toney in 92-93-94, let alone Jones Jr. He DID get beaten by Eubank in 95, and Benn was a joke post-McClellan compared to his former self (just watch the Nardiello and Perez fights where he actually performs worse than he did in both Collins fights).
I agree...I just want to hear it from "the horses mouth" so to speak.
