boxing talk:
December 23, 2005 - Reliable sources from Germany have informed Boxingtalk.com that undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor has formally offered former WBO middleweight champion Felix Sturm $750,000 plus the German TV rights to challenge the undefeated champion in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas on HBO World Championship Boxing in late April. Although we've been unable to officially confirm it, Boxingtalk has also received word that Taylor would face Sam Soliman should the Sturm camp find his offer unreasonable. There will be much more to follow so stay tuned to our front page at all times. REMEMBER WHERE YOU HEARD IT FIRST! (12:38 AM EST)
I agree with you that Taylor would most likely come out the victor. Taylor has more in his arsenal and throws his punches with more on them.
However, I disagree with the statement that Taylor possesses the better jab. From what I have seen of both fighters (about 3 Sturm fights and 8 or so Taylor fights), Sturm throws his jab straighter, quicker, and harder. Sturm gets his body into his jab and there isn't really a trigger for it (whereas Taylor does that whole bow and arrow deal sometimes). Taylors jab did not look good at all against Hopkins defense, and even though Sturms and Hop possess different defensive styles, both are pretty damned good.
I also think Taylors bad habit of swinging wide would help Sturm to see a few openings. I always thought Taylor was a very sharp puncher...maybe its just Hopkins defense that was making him look sloppy.
Anyway, I'd take Taylor by close decision, but Sturm does have a shot to outpoint him.
Fair enough. I think Taylor's jab is harder. Agree to disagree. About the rest, I think you're right on. Goos post.
Why is Taylor fighting ODLH retreads? Isn't Sturm a Jr. Middleweight?
No. He's never been. He's a natural-born middleweight. I don't know where you got that idea.
i agree.. but sturm is a better jabber.. will this be a boring fight? i dont think so. sturm can be very active with his jabs while taylor would most likely counter. this fight will surely be a treat for fans who love sweet science.
anyway, i may hand this off to taylor
Taylor is at his best when he's aggressive. He's not a very good counterpuncher. When he sits back and waits he is there to be hit as Hopkins showed in both of thier fights. Sturm would more than likely play the role of counterpuncher with Taylor being aggressive. It could actually be a good fight if Sturm can handle the strength and power advantages of Taylor and counter effectively.
Taylor should take care of Sturm, will be a jab fest though.

If Hopkins couldn't beat Taylor by getting his respect, neither will Sturm. Sutrm has to move, move, move in order to beat Taylor. Jab vs. Jab, Taylor's is better. Sturm has to get on his bicycle, make Taylor lead and counter him. And at the end of the day, I'm betting it isn't gonna work.

I'm glad taylors willing to go up to the best but i think sturm has his number in this one. i believe sturms jab is better and that will be the decideing factor
too bad stupid internet haters won't give Taylor credit unless he fights Winky...Winky a man who beat a blown up lightweight twice, and a blown up/semi retired welterweight to all of sudden out of no where be considered the best MW...blah...
well if thats the case why isnt taylor fighting him then? winky would beat taylor all over the ring and taylor people know this
Yeah you are right about a lack of combos. However, Taylor (at least against Hopkins) hasn't thrown a ton of combos lately either. Sturms right uppercut is pretty good. I think his jab is excellent and I actually like it better than Taylors (or at least as much). I think Jermain is a bigger 160 though and hearing that he won in the Olympics gives me pause to pick Sturm. Plus how badly is Sturm gonna want to fight in Arkansas after he got screwed in Vegas against Oscar? I guess for the right money. I think that Taylor's camp is hoping they get to fight Soliman because he's everyone's darling at the moment but has a zero percent chance of actually beating Taylor
If Sturm's people still say he's not ready, Sturm will be labled a pussy, because Taylor is just as young as him.
The battle of the jabs (Winky vs. Sturm) may be better than some people may think..
this will be an easy fight for Taylor. He was a lil timid of Hopkins skill so he held back alot, he will not do this with sturm and beat him as he did to Joppy
I would favor Taylor in this fight but I don't think it will be a blowout by any means. Having just recently watched Sturm's fight with Delahoya he did alot more than jab. It's true about half his punches were jabs but he threw and landing some good right hands and lefthooks. The final numbers were 112 jabs and 122 power punches so he wasn't all jabs in there. I wouldn't give Taylor that much of an edge in speed either. Jab for jab Taylor may get the better but he has also shown that he is open for the jab as well. Sturm has a very good jab and we all know Taylor is wide open to the righthand and Sturm also has a very good righthand.
In the end I think Taylor may prove to be the stronger fighter and come out with a close unanimous decision.
I think Taylor will win by a wide UD, maybe even a KO. Sturm is a good fighter, but DLH was so cut up that he performed so badly against him because in Oscar's words Sturm is 'an ordinary fighter'. After being in there against him DLH could feel that he could and should have done better. Taylor has just beaten the guy that was p4p the best and pretty much untouchable - he needs to get some more respect for the wins and I can't see Sturm causing him too many problems
