He is one of the most overated fighters I have seen in a while. He was a product of HBO, desperate for a new face at the time. Winky Wright exposed him and Trinidad finished him off. De la hoya beat the shell of Vargas, who still put up a decent fight, despite the toll of the beatings he suffered at the hands of Trinidad and Wright. Even the powder puff Rivera knocked vargas down before Vargas fought De la hoya.
I'm looking forward to the Mosley beating the piss out of Vargas. Should be a great fight. Mosley has MUCH, MUCH more too offer then Vargas.
Vargas was doing really good until the Tito fight after that it was all down hill, he fought a prime Tito and tried to fight Titos fight and got a beating..
Sure he was hyped but the mother fucker flat out lived up to all of the billing.
He wasnt built up for a long period of time fighting bums...Oscar start fighting serious world class threats early on in his career.
It is one thing to have super star written all over you and then shit all over yourself like Francisco Bojado or Ricardo Williams and a completely different thing to have it writen all over you then produce.
Oscar was a fucking beast between 130-147.
good post, 100% agreed :boxing:
fernando vargas was not a hype machine he was a good fighter and a very good boxer he was not just a brawler just watch his fights with winky even though i belive he lost to winky he boxed great and against ike quartey he also showed his boxing skills ... going into the trinidad fight he had that "macho" mentality and we all now the rivalry between p.r and mex. so he abandoned his boxing skills and tried to go toe to toe with tito which was a bad mistake having only 20 pro fights did not help him much either .. tito ended vargas career going into the dlh fight i belive he was allready a shot fighter even though he fought well dlh just made it official .....i think vargas will be remembered as a good fighter who was brought up to fast ( the tito fight) he will be in the "what could of been " category ...

Saying Vargas 'Is One Of The Greatest Warrior In The Boxing History' is laying it on way to thick. Hes got a glass jaw and everyone know it. The two biggest fights of his career (so far)hes been KO'd. Shane Mosley can't wait for this fight.
He's overated, AND he is an HBO creation. Like I said, HBO was in need of a superstar that would appeal to everyone. Vargas appealed to girls because of his looks, and his tough guy attitude, and his border-line cocky attitude appealed to guys. People wanted to see this guy fight.
Just because he's a warrior, doesn't make him a really good fighter. Is Gatti a talented fighter because he's been in plenty of fight of the years?
Vargas is alot like hearns. He came up short in his biggest super-fights, AND he hasn't shown any signs on coming back. He's shot at what?29? That's a joke. This guy never had a prime he was always a creation.

I'm excited about this fight also. Shit yes hes overrated! I may be wrong here, but hasn't he lost every 'big' fight hes been in?
Hes entertaining for sure, because hes gotta take you out before his glass jaw get hit.

oh shit your right!!! I though B-Hop had that belt?
Nope I believe Sturm had the WBO title when Oscar went and absolutely beat the living shit out of him for it...I still feel bad thinking about how bad Felix got beat...that poor boy got fucking creamed!
I just think Oscar had to big of expectations for hismelf...the little shit after winning his first fight on Tuesday night fights starts blabbing about how he is going to win 6 titles in 6 weights...(didnt he do it?)
Hearns is a lot like Oscar...some of the biggest fights both of them were in they seemed to come up a bit short.
A shot to the liver made him come up short of 6 in 6.
Never said he wasnt great and he did live up to the hype but had he not had the talent with all the hype around him he would have fallen in that category.
You are correct about it but first impression to me was creation and redeemed himself till he got to 160. If we look at a the big picture and how he wanted to be like a Duran or a Hearns (belts wise)he didnt live up to the full potential.

I hate your whole tone. We can be critical of fighters without it reflecting on us. Yes, they all do deserve credit for stepping in the ring but we can be critical of them. So, stop that "too much time on your hand" garbage and talk about the issue.
I don't agree with the original post on this thread but use some facts to argue your point.
The only thing that was created was a undue thread saying that Vargas basicaly can not fight. That man is a warrior, he gives what he has in every fight that I have seen. Do not be blind, Vargas has skills and is worthy of the exposure that he has had through his career.
To me, this whole thread is a misleading and unjust attack of Vargas, written by a person with to much time on their hands and not enough boxing knowledge to know any better.
In my humble opinion,
Rockin' :boxing:
Just because you have expectations and the media and fans expect big things out of you does not mean you are a creation...now if you have all of these expectations put on you and you have done nothing to warrant this then yes yopur a creation
but...
Imagine Deion Sanders...just because he was super hyped coming out of Florida State should that make him a creation? The whole prime time things was certainly a great marketing ploy but it woulndt of lasted if he couldnt play.
The Golden Boy thing was a nice little marketing trick but it would have gone away real quick of Jimmy Bredhal or John John Molina would have beat the shit out of Oscar...
Agree 100%.

Creation my ass. Vargas was a great fighter in the ring and just got ahead of himself before he was prepared. There is no shame in losing to DLH and Trinidad...those are two all-time great welterweights in their own right.
Also, W. Benitez was the youngest champ ever...not Vargas.
