Yesterday, I was watching the Norton-Cooney legendary nights for the 10 millionth time...
Well, I went back to the part where he KNOCKS out Norton...
That was just plain shitty what he did..
At the point where it was obvious Norton was OUT, like about to DROP, unconcious...at the point it was obvious he had the fight WON!
Then BOOM! Another pig punch by Cooney, then another!
Then I was like ok I think this is where he stopped then
BOOM! a hook! a uppercut!
That was just plain sick and made me lost respect for him...
I mean it was brutal, but I enjoyed watching when he was T-ing off on Norton's head and afterwards I started imitating it in the air. Those were some nice bombs.
YOU HAVE GO TO BE KIDDING!! Man, as professional fighters we LOVE and hope to get our opponent in that position..it is brutal, of course, but thats what we do... fighters smell blood, they long for those moments.... you would have to fight i guess, to really understand.. but don't hate Gerry, man... THAT is what he did for a living... win and lose isnt the only thing.. u have to crave destruction to excel as slugger/puncher.
can I be in this conversation? :D :boxing:

Tha Greatest....
If you wannna be a fighter, you better have that same killer instinct that Cooney showed.
A fighter just does.....no room for thinking too much.
Yeah, it was the ref's fault for the most part. Norton was already out, and had sunk as far as he could, he was basically squatting with his back against the corner, he couldn't fall. I think alot of people are just put off by the fact that Cooney would keep on throwing bombs like that knowing Norton could'nt defend himself. Those were some huge bombs, short hooks that he pivoted his whole body with, and uppercuts with everything behind them. Pretty brutal stuff.
It was the ref's fault from what im reading. The ref's main job is to protect the fighter. Cooney cant really be blamed if the ref wont step in like he is supposed to.
That fight was kind of hard to watch, I like Cooney, but I like Norton alot too, don't feel he gets his due from most people.
Anybody see that Mercer fight they reran a while back where the guy is out and his head is like in between the second and top rope, and Mercer kind of lumbers over there and nails him right on the chin with a Foreman like right hand? That was fucked up. How about one of Tyson's early fights where the guy is pretty much sitting down, and Tyson nails him with an uppercut, fucked up too lol I also saw Manfredy get a guy on the ropes and nail him. The guy dropped his hands becase he was out, and Manfredy started throwing haymakers. Most of them just grazed the guy, but the last one snapped his head back pretty violently. He still didn't go down though, the ref jumped in lol
cooney was doing his job. he was winning a fight by any means necessary. if you wanna lose respect for somebody, lose respect of the ref who didnt do shit when it was obvious norton wasnt protecting himself.
Well the referee was trying to stop it but Gerry kept on throwing and throwing, then when like Norton was basically out and done, except his knees weren't touching the canvas, that's when Gerry threw like a extra 4 bombs and the referee tried to stop it, but Gerry kept on throwing.
It definitely wasn't Cooneys fault. The ref didn't step in when he should have...blame it on el refo
When you consider what Cooney is doing today for retired boxers with FIST, well you can't help but like the guy.
Well, you got it the wrong way man..
I just meant, that was ruthless, but I don't blame him..
He's still a great man!
true, it was strange, i guess ken norton probably deosent remember what he was thinking so you cant ask...
i gained a lot of respect for cooney after watching that program, that being said i had none in the 1st place, i had been brainwashed by people who didnt like him into believing he was a no good white bum who didnt deserve his shot and whatever..
i was amazed at how humble he was and how willingly he admitted to his own inadequacies...... the beating he took in the last couple rounds of that fight is hard to watch.... very few people who were that overmacthed have had the heart to put in on the line like that.... there were a lot worse fighters than cooney who deserved a lot less of what they got.
That's why I still respect him. ;) :)
lol
I feel you, that's why I said some respect, I still respect Cooney because he was a great man..
but sometimes, when you get KTFO on your feet, your out, and really can't do anything, so Norton couldn't go down, because he was already out on his feet you know.

the referee shoulda been there, bottom line, it looks bad for Cooney when you watch it but cmon, this is boxing, heat of the battle, you keep punching until someone or somehting tells you to stop.
also, guys who were in nortons position need to know when to go down. some guys go so far so stay up they end up getting murdered, which is what happened in this case.
lol
