Im not going to put Mike Tyson on this list because he was great, he just wasn't the greatest that everyone thought he would become....
I would have to go with either Boom Boom Mancini or David Tua
Donald Curry....he's my #1 pick. '84-'86.....the most brilliant fighter I've seen. Couldn't sustain it, of course.
Rosario....best "prospect" I've ever seen. After seeing him early on, & especially after he wiped up Edwin Viruet.....I thought he was going to become one of the best fighers ever. Had a horrible time with JL Ramirez..& only had flashes (Bramble) of that early brilliance from then on.
Ike Ibeabuchi....the heavyweight divion would be worth a helluvalot had this looney tune not been so looney. A sight not seen today- the complete package at heavyweight.
Ike Quartey....Between the Espana & Phillips fights, I thought we were witnessing the future of the sport. Would have picked that version to defeat all of the 147lbers of his day (Tito & Oscar included). The man got a little too soft to maintain that level
Unfortunately, you're right about Quartey. Another guy that was a contender around that time that just couldn't put it together in the big fights was Oba Carr. He was very talented, and gave Quartey a pretty tough fight, but was picked apart by Trinidad and De la Hoya. He was successful, but seemed to be capable of much more. I also think Julian Jackson was capable of more than he achieved. He was dominant for a long time, but after the first KO loss to Gerald McClellan, he just fell off. Both these guys had good careers, but I think both could've done much more.
Jose Luis Lopez...was definitely another waste of HUGE talent.
Could punch like hell with both hands.....& put his shots together beautifully. he had a cast-iron chin.
But, he didn't have the fire of a real fighter. He certainly didn't train enough, or fight enough.
Ability-wise....he was something, IMO.
Dwight Davidson
Jorge locomotora castro. He was the first to go to the cards with roy jones . He fought terry norris. He fought Jirov and he has a middle weight body. He was middle weight champ wba in 1994 . Remember that fight in mexico with david jackson. And apart for that he never trained.
Joe Calzaghe - i'm a fan, but i'm first to admit that he fights bums.
Hamed - This ones pretty obvious.
Meldrick Taylor - Damn, that fight with Chavez. If that fight hand't happened, he'd probably be recognized in the top ten of his weight class. If not that, then top 15.
Tyson - as far as i'm concerned, Tyson is not 'great'. He was 'good'. He looked to be 'great' when destroying bums, but he never beat any quality opposition - old larry holmes, trevor berbick. Lost to the best fighters he fought. Holyfield and Lewis. And lost to Buster Douglas - i'll grant Douglas was looking damn good that fight. He never reached his potential. Coulda been a top 5 heavyweight, maybe even top 3 - but it wasn't to be. =(
ne 1 that can dominate almost all of the 80s yes almost all of the 80s. should be concedered great. when your 80s era is known as the tyson era u should be great. jus thought i should throw out some knowledge :)

Dwight Davidson
He was one lazy fighter, in the ring. He had the size & talent, but no fire.
His fight with Tony Sibson was an atrocity.....dreary as hell.
Ikw Ibeabuchi is in my lifetime the biggest missed opportunity in boxing. He had the skill and power to KO Chris Byrd, he had the speed and chin to withstand all of Tua's bombs, and he was absolutely fearless. Problem was he was crazy. Spadafora, Meldrick Taylor, and Riddick Bowe are also candidates. Whats good with Panchito Bojado?

Boom Boom Mancini was real good, but protected. The first fighter who could truly fight with boxing ability that he fought, beat him.
I have to say Hector Macho Camacho. Fast, slick, great defense, great chin, and power, he lacked work ethic, he had so much talent and put it to waste by just barely training to fight, even for the big fights.

I'm going to suprise a few of you now and say Nigel Benn and Kostya Tszyu. These cats achieved, and were great. BUT if you see them in the amateurs you'll see that they were fucking Awesome! Not awesome, but AWESOME! I mean they just seemed much, much faster. Kostya for example, his best asset in the amateurs was always his left hand work, he did a lot of great left hand work. In the pro's, Kostya evolved into a slower fighter with a power-laced laser right hand. Benn in the amateurs could string together hooks and uppercuts like no other and his punches even sounded different to everybody elses. Benn in the amateurs had lightning fast combination's to the point where he looked unbeatable!
Do you know what these guys 'downfalls' were? I'll tell you......
Not long after turning pro they started using weights, and it decreased their speed. That was their 'downfall' because they would of been even better than they were had they not used weights.
Earnie Shavers anyone? The hardest hitting heavyweight reduced to a mere nobody in boxing, noone even cares about him.
Gerry Cooney, probably gave Norton the beating of his life, I even think it was worse than what Shavers did to him!
Ken Norton of course also, he should be up their with Ali but he isn't!
Riddick Bowe, enough said!
Butterbean
WTF Butterbean really?
