i'd have to agree wit juy juy...i seen sum of the eubank and benn fights and i would say dat i kno benn would have a real good chance at beating jones and honestly....eubank was more skilled than jones.
Eubank and Benn are the top two at 168, there is no disputing that whatsoever.
Toney only made three or four IBF defences, and Jones Jr made five IBF defences (four of which weren't even ranked in the top 10 at 168 at the time).
Eubank and Benn were longest-reigning 168 champions NOT Toney.
Benn made 10 defences of his WBC title and Eubank made 15 world title defences. And not only that, but Toney and Jones fights were only screened in America (those that were screened at all) whereas Benn and Eubank fights were all screened world-wide.
I'd have trouble giving "all-time" status to a division like Super Middleweight, which has only been around for about 20 years or so. But if I did rank fighters that fought and had success at around that weight, I might be inclined to put somebody like Sam Langford in the top spot.
That's what I was going to say, but I was hesitant because somebody would probably jump all over me because I've never actually seen Sam in action.
I think you're right about McClellan. If he had stepped up to 168 he wouldn't have had to drain himself to make weight which some feel led to the tragic conlusion of the Benn fight
He fought Benn at 168. I think he already had problmes with his brain before the bout, but that is pure speculation. Nigel Benn was a tremendous puncher and he was nailing McClellan clean all fight long, but especially he was landing alot of punches to the back of the head of McClellan, and you cant take punches from a guy that can hit like Benn behind the head. Your skull is soft in the back of your head, and your brain is fragile. It is why rabbit punching is disallowed. I dont blame Benn for it though because he was hurt bad and struggling and just trying everything he could do to win.
Also McClellan fought a stupid fight vs Benn. He was letting Benn get off first, and not throwing his patented left hook to the body nearly enough, plus he was not doing muchin the way of defending himself. McClellan had such a good chin though you literally had to kill him to beat him or knock him down, and Benn is for certain one of the heavies t hitters ever at 168.

I dont know who to say is the best of 168 all time I have to admit I am learned enough on fighters from the past to make a formulation. However I do see with much certainty Gerald McClellan destroying Jones at 168 as he did in the amateures. Nigel Benn having a very good chance at him. Julian Jackson having a very good chance at him. A 100% on his game Toney I think also beats him. These are just fighters from Jones own era.
I would love to someday see a Jones Toney rematch at heavyweight. Toney would murder him. And Jones would not be able to use age as an excuse becausee I belive that Toney is older.
Jones beat Toney at 168. That makes him the greatest ever at that weight class in your mind. The same James Toney who lossed at 168 twice to Montell Griffin and to Drake Thadzi. I guess Drake Thadzi and Montell Griffin have to be top 5 all time then at 168 and Toney #2 by this logic. The Jones Toney fight was horrible. It was boring and Jones just has the right style for Toney. Plus Toney was not in good condition for that fight.
I tended to rate fighters based on the weight at which they performed best. And Jones did beat Toney at super middle.
I make no claims of perfection. Who's on your list?
I am not going to forumulate one. But at the time Jones beat Toney by that lame pockshotting from the outside descision Toney was also taking losses from Montell Griffin and Drake Thadzi. There are many more accomplished fighters even this era at 168 than Jones.
