Hey guys, im a new Brit boxing fan and wanted to put some of my views down on the Super Middleweights of the late 1990s as they get a lot of attention here!!
RJJ - Definitely the best.....the guy was/is a phenom, amazing athlete who made great fighters like hopkins, toney, mccalum, hill etc all look average. His speed may neva be rivalled again.....sadly i dont think he is the fighter now that he was - but i do strongly think he can turn back the clock and defeat tarver...in fact i think he will knock him. He seems to be taking the fight v seriously and back with his dad. I dont think any of the Brit fighters wud ever had beaten RJJ.
Eubank - Extremely skillfull fighter...had superb skills and defence. Great fighter - who was neva the same after the 2nd watson fight....the 2nd best of this generation in my opinion
Watson - Purely classy figher....totally outboxed Benn in their fight and beat Eubank first time round. Wud have given rjj the hardest fight of all the brits i reckon
Benn - Very exciting fighter......full of power - limited skills. But massive heart and one of the biggest punchers ever in this division. Eventually he was in too many battles - and the mcclelan fight was his final battle....he was neva the same after that and he admits to it.
Mcclelan - sorry bout the misspelling....didnt see much of him fight..but heard he was the hardest puncher ever in this division...a real tragedy wat happened to him
With guys like jackson, mccalum etc....i didnt see enuff of. Herol Graham was also an excellent brit boxer who in any other era wud have been a world champ. I thought robin reid cud have been a tru great - and thou he was world champ he neva really fulfilled his potential. Calzaghe i personally believe is VERY overrated - i mean who has he ever beaten?? an old eubank....he shud have lost the reid fight.....he neva gone to the states to fight. I think lacy wud eat him...
also who were G Mac's earlier defeats to? was it v early in his career?
Manny Steward wasn't in his corner when Gerald lost to Milton and Ward, Manny was in the dressing room with Dennis Andries because Andries was fighting later on those nights, Gerald only had that fat idiot Willie Brown in his corner who didn't have a clue. And Gerald back then was an attacking fighter who went head-first, that is what he was known for in the 80's, very erratic and coming forward non-stop. But after back-to-back losses, Manny made Gerald top priority. There was a complete change in Gerald's boxing style, as the 80's turned into the 90's he developed into an awesome boxer-puncher. Gerald no longer came forward erratically, he was more patient.. he now circled his opponents and picked them off well, he was one of the best three body-punchers ever.. aside from a powerful jab when he decided to use it, he threw hooks and uppercuts to the body with either hand and he threw right crosses, overhand rights and left hooks to the head.. he had good ring generalship and generally was fucking awesome. He never lost a fight with Manny in his corner.
Ive never seen "benn" before in my life. Was he ever on American TV?
There was a lot of American interest in Benn in the late 80's ofcourse, Goosen tried making the Nunn V Benn fight in 1988 because he thought that it would set the boxing world alight. Benn V Watson was screened live in America. Benn's five fights in America in 89 and 90 were screened live in America, his world title wins against DeWitt and Barkley were live on ABC (free TV). His super-fights with Eubank in 93 and McClellan in 95 were on Showtime. That's all I know for sure, there maybe more.
Heh, I'm going to Middlesbrough in the fall (got invited back after a tryout there). Should be a great experience, hopefully I can go pro :)
You play football? And your coming from America to play a game of football then fly back?
Tell me about it. What do you mean.
but benn beat G Mac and most of us agree benn wud have been beaten by RJJ.....also who were G Mac's earlier defeats to? was it v early in his career?
enough of these petty questionnaires. Gerald McCellan KO 1 Roy Jones. End of.
McClellan had better boxing skill than Jones, Jones only had the superior reflexes.
Reflexes dont do you no good when G man is pressing you like a mother*f*cker pounding away. Jones' counterpunches would be nothing to McClellan. G would cut off the ring and have him out in one.
fair play - wud have been a great fight....rjj's skills against G Mac's brute force. They were and stilla re gd friends right? U think they wud have evetually got in a ring together?

G could outbox Jones. And outfight him (very very easily.) G was made of steel it would take a cannon ball straight to the cranium to knock him down. Fighters that can take so much punishment like that are the ones that end up with brain damage.

He didn't just beat him. He whipped him good by all accounts.
Well the fight wasn't recorded sadly, but going by what witnesses say.. Gerald nailed him!

E.
Gerald McClellan KO 1 Roy Jones. The guy was relentless and reknowned for first round KO's plus we all what happens when Jones get hit, and he would get hit and get hit good vs G.
G also whipped Jones' ass in an ABA touranment. He was already brain damaged from the all bombs he took from Jackson and in other fights by the time he fought Benn.
haha fly guy watever.....big up urself in ur name. Ur obviously very friendly....anyways - yeh moschino i agree with ur email above... steve collins was crazy fighter - all action, head on. Bit like ricky hatton....Yeh eubank really showed a lot of heart in the steve thompson fight - i remember he had thomson for the taking but then didnt finish the job (apparant flashbacks to watson). Bro - u heard of david haye? he supposed to be the next big thing at light heavy - great amateur record thou he lost to thomson last year....
Yo, I'm a new brit here too, 19 yo
student of the game and all that
Totally agree Roy Jones was best of the bunch, he was the most rounded, beating JT like he did was fucking sick and he was just so speedy, fluent and rounded
I remember watching Eubies 'world tour' of britain and ireland on sky and it was a joke lol, but i can let him off for that cos of the heart he showed against The Cat Thompson (i was there both fights with my bro), after looking back at his career pre his 'world tour' againts bums i can say man this a guy who was just born to box, he was so slippery he makes soap and butter seem like rubber
Watson was fine counter puncher and proper smooth, yo, but he didnt have the outstanding talent of Banks or even Nige, he was'nt as good a puncher as them man and yea he was consistent and shit but didnt have the x factor to go that step further
The only fighters who would even live w/ a prime Roy Jones are the G Man Gerry Mac and Eubank (Nige and Collins got lucky -proper big upsets there)
Dude, check the title of this thread first.
Asking questions isnt being paranoid.
And he wasnt being an attention whore, he was stating his opinion on some fighters.
