Pacquiao has a surprise for Morales
By nick giongco
HOLLYWOOD, California — The battery of trainers assigned to turn Manny Pacquiao into a wrecking ball come March 19 in Las Vegas said Wednesday that Erik Morales will be in for a big surprise.
Buboy Fernandez, who has been with Pacquiao since the beginning of his training, believes Morales will pay dearly for thinking that the Filipino is a one-dimensional slugger who relies mostly on his lethal left hand.
"Coach Freddie Roach and I have studied Morales’ key fights on tape and we already know what to do," said Fernandez. "The fights of Morales against Jesus Chavez, Carlos Hernandez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Daniel Zaragoza (dating back to 1997) have all been dissected."
Pacquiao, who played the guitar and a video game before hitting the sack, said he can’t wait for the opening bell.
"Talagang halos hindi na ako makapag-hintay," said Pacquiao.
Pacquiao’s Australian conditioning coach, Justine Fortun, said the 26-year-old lefty is ripe and ready to go 12 rounds with the long-armed Morales.
Pacquiao is scheduled to spar for six rounds on Thursday afternoon (Friday morning in Manila) at the Wild Card Boxing Club on Vine Street, just a mile away from his two bedroom apartment unit at Sunset and Vine in the heart of Hollywood.
In contrast, Morales trains in seclusion in the mountains of Otomi just outside Mexico City.
"We are ready what the Morales camp is preparing for Manny," said Justine Fortune, a one-time opponent of British heavyweight Lennox Lewis.
Fortune accompanies Pacquiao in his roadwork at the Griffith Park and makes sure the famed puncher does everything to the letter.
"Talagang magandang laban ito para kay Manny. Nakikita ko na ang mangyayari," said Fernandez with a smile.
After another hard day at the Wild Card on Wednesday, Pacquiao went to the HBO offices to meet with call center workers tapped to sell his upcoming fight with Morales on HBO Pay-Per-View.
For the first time, a Filipino is headlining a show on PPV and to enjoy the action in the comfort of their living room, a subscriber has to shell out $44.95.
Pacquiao is scheduled to motor to Las Vegas in the afternoon of Monday after his last sparring session. In Las Vegas, Pacquiao will only be subjected to the punch-mitt routine, stretching and shadow boxing.
The final press conference will be held on Wednesday, while the official weigh in is set on Friday.
