Why Is Winky Wright So Overrated?

Is it because he beat Shane Mosley, or because he beat Trinnidad.. I don't see him being that good, all he does is jab, jab, jab.. he beat Shane Mosley coz he didn't let him get inside, and the same thing with Tito.. If he fought another star with a jab, and skills and power, he'd lose.. and i'm tired of people saying that he has a good chin, he's never even fought any knock out punchers who actually hit him to even test his chin, so I don't think that he should be in the P4P list for that.. mines is, 1. Maywheather (The Skill is undeniable) 2. Hopkins (I'm still not convinced that anyone is technically better, Taylor got lucky) 3. Corrales (Personal Fav. now, greatest finisher of all time) 4. Morales (He beat someone Barrerra couldn't beat, and has only loss to Barerra) 5. Barerra (Earned his ranking, been in some very good fights,and a legend) 6. Jeff Lacey (He's undeafeted, and has overcame major adversity before in vanderpool and other, the champ) 7. Antonio Tarver (Not just coz he beat Roy, but because of how he did it.. He came in with only one loss. he beat Griffin, Roy Jones twice IMO, and Glenn Jhonson, he's Champion) 8. Ricky Hatton (for now, overrated IMO, he's there for being undeafeted and beating KT, but let him fight Mayweather) 9. Jermain Taylor (for now, for winning a descision over Hopkins, this is the only reason in the world he's on the list) 10. Jose Luis Castillo (Great warrior who almost knocked out Corrales in the greatest fight of all time) NOW, I WOULD PROBABLY MAKE WINKY #11.. I'M SORRY, BUT THE DUDE IS A 1 HIT WONDER.. HE BEATS A BLOWN UP, OVERRATED, PAST HIS ERA TRINNIDAD, NOW HE'S A STAR? HE WOULD OF HAD A TOUGHER FIGHT IN FELIX STURM IMO.. SHANE MOSLEY WAS NEVER THAT GOOD EITHER IMO, JUST A HUSTLA. SO CAN SOMEONE PLZ TELL ME WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE RIDING WINKY'S D***..

You know what your absolutly right. His chin isnt tested....beacuse he doesnt let anybody get to it! I havent seen the Vargas fight although I really want to and all Ive heard about it is that WInky got shafted by the judges.

Winky is overrated. When Hopkins beats a guy who is smaller than him he gets bashed, but when Winky does it, he gets all the props in the world...why is that? He beats a terribly overrated Shane Mosley who might I add was way past his best and blown up. Then he beats a guy like Trinidad who can only beat up a guy who stands directly in front of him. Tito Trinidad could never handle a jab and people act like Winky was the 1st one to expose Trinidad. Let's not forget that he based his gameplan on what both Oscar and Hopkins did in their fights. He's terribly overrated. I think it comes from no one knowing who he was for so long. I agree with most of that, nice post.

hmm Winky is not overrated. He is way underrated by you though. The fact that you say "all he has is a jab" pretty much shows your dearth of boxing knowledge. The jab is the most important punch in the game, and many fighters suffer from a lack of it. Wright's jab is surpassed by no one's and he is smart enough to use it, and use it often.

I think Winky is worthy of top 10 p4p but not as high as some people have him. The fight I think he proved the most in was againts a prime Vargas.Why cause that was Vargas' natural weight and he gave him all he could handle in a very close fight. Shane does not belong at 154 and Tito doesnt belong at 160.Of course these 2 fights count but not as much as the Vargas fight IMO. Shane was pushing it at 147, got his ass kicked twice by Forest and Tito was demolished by a natural 160 pounder in Hopkins. I believe Winky could be beat by Hopkins and killed by Lacey.As Hopkins has proved it twice it all comes down to how big you are at that weight.He doesnt have the same skills as a DelaHoya but he killed him with a body shot.Trinidad at welter was unbeatable and Hopkins knocked his ass out and Hopkins isnt a moster puncher.Believe me had Taylor been a natural smaller weight Hopkins would have koed him also.He went the distance with Eastman aand Joppy proving my point even further.If Winky starts beating top guys at 154 and 160 and if he does it convingly then he could be at 2 or 3.

Haha...I hear you man. I agree. He is beatable. I think he hasn't been respected enough and now is getting to collect what he is due. Only one way to settle it and that is in the ring. You bring up the right point! He was underrespected for so long and now he is getting paid back with interest...we shall see if he is worth it.

Generally speaking I would not say he is overrated, what I am pointing out is that there are too many people out there that think Winky is just about unbeatable. You hear Hopkins was ducking Winky....wrong, you hear how his defense is basically inpenetrable...wrong...he is a very good fighter but he is by some being overblown a bit...at least in my mind and time will tell if Im a dipshit like THE DEVIL or I am brilliant like my cousin. Winky has the ability to beat anybody at or near his weight. I said that before the Trinidad fight. Any fighter can be beaten on any given night. When he's on his game, it's very difficult to beat Winky Wright. Fighters make up excuses about him not being a draw but in reality they just don't want to risk fighting him. Wins over Trinidad and Mosley do not make you overrated. Jeff Lacey is undeafeted. Winky isn't, and Lacey has actually had a tough fight before, and has been tested.. IMO, Hopkins would beat him, Taylor would beat him, Sturm would give him trouble, Lacey would knock him out.. Name one great physical fight that he's been in, and i'll shut up.. I mean, people might be ducking him, true, but this is the reason he hasn't proven himself yet to be in the top ten.. we just don't know what he can do, he hasn't fought anybody yet, it ain't fair to put him in there with people who had great fights.. it's spelled "Lacy"

Boxing is a crazy sport! One minute everyone thinks Winky is going to get ko'd by Trinidad and moments later those same people are ready to call him unbeatable based upon what he did in 1 fight against 1 opponent, thank god styles make fights right! Winky is a very good fighter dont get me wrong but he is certainly beatable. Sure he has a nice jab but what happens when he faces someone that can adapt to his jab? What happens when he faces someone stronger or smarter? Who are these poeple? Well I believe Hopkins would have beaten Winky without much problems, it would have been easier than trying to outpoint Jermain. I also think Jermain Taylors jab is just too good and too powerful...sorry folks Winky has good defense but lets not get carried away he does not have Executioner style defense! Watch Winky against JC Candelo, Im telling you this guy is beatable. He is a very good fighter but I dont think the term GREAT and the name Winky Wright will ever go together, I could be wrong but Im not willing to give him the key to the castle because he outboxed Trinidad.

Exactly people duck winky cuz he has a style thats hard to look against. his defense and southpaw jab make it hard for sum1 to look good cuz they can land/get off many punches against him....a versatile fighter has nothing to worry about other than looking bad
