Larry is good for the sport. He tells it like it is. What other commentator says what he wants regardless whether the fighter is standing right next to them. I can't hink of any other sports commentator besides Jim Rome. Merchant is the man.
Guys..... you want to count yourselves lucky. I'm not exposed to Larry very often only on the big fights - but I find him kind of commical - like your grandad - old people reach a certain age when they just get rude and opinionated but its ok because there old!
On considering yourselves lucky.... we over here in the UK have to put up with:
Julius Francis - the one that Tyson laid out about 5 years ago, the most interesting thing about him is that the Sun (British tabloid newspaper) sponsored the soles of his boxing boots before the Tyson fight because they thought it would give them great coverage the amount he would be on his ass - they wern't wrong
and
Nicky Piper - dubed the intelligent boxer - and the most boring man on the planet - I often find myself looking up in air with a real pained expression on my face and saying ...'Oh Piper....shut up'I find myself saying the same thing about Larry.

i hate merchant and now that kellermans back he should take his spot
Kellerman can't do color...not his style. Did you ever LISTEN TO him do tuesday night fights? Not good.
I enjoy both Larry and Max and would be cool with either of them behind the mic. I will admit that sometimes Larry tends to wander a little with his thoughts, and when it comes to Hopkins he can come off sounding a little like JUYJUY, but he is still entertaining and insightful on most occasions. I will tell you who I am really enjoying on the HBO telecasts, that is Roy Jones! I was never a big fan of him as a fighter, but he really provides some GREAT analysis during fights-- much better then George Foreman who used to have prolonged bouts of confusion on the air. It would be interesting to see Tyson sign with Showtime as their fighter in the booth.... I wonder if it will ever happen...
The whole drunk thing is getting lame.
Anyway, Merchant is the best thing HBO boxing has going for it.
That geriatric old fart is so biased because who does he get paid by? HBO
The guys eyes are so bad he couldn't tell the diffference if there was bird shit on it.
I wish Toney would go up to his ass and punk his ass so the gets a heart attack and dies
Merchant knows shit about boxing and I always noticed he scores close fights really badly. He scores fights commercially, like how an uneducated boxing watcher would.
The fact is he is too old to score fights just like older guys don't box as well because reflexs go down the drain after 40 and vision after 50.
1.) Punching. Merchant thinks the guy landing more punch is better. Not always the case if the punchs don't hurt. He can't seem to distinguish clean punchs to punchs that are ineffective
2.) Ring generalship. Merchant likes guys to go forward and alway bagged on Hopkins, Toney, Mayweather for being counter punchers and going backuwards? Yet he kiss RJJ's ass so much he has RJJ's asshole imprinted on his lips.
3.) Efficiency. Merchant has no idea what this is and never has.
He....just......talkksss......like......thissss....
way too much for me
I could not agree more. I was watching the Hopkins fight tonight and whenever he started talking, he just seemed to drag the show to his speed, which is snail-like. I only started watching boxing recently and I already think that this man must go.
I think Kellerman was only on there because Steward was working in Harris' corner.
Well, yeah, Merchant has confirmed that. Whenever Steward is in the corner for a fight, Kellerman will be there.
