Why doesn't Lennox Lewis get much respect?

Some un real plain hatred in this thread, I'm quite shocked by it actually. Also, none of it really makes any sense. There just excuses for hating a legitimate top HW. Too cocky - hardly compared with the likes of Tyson, fine when he does it, double standard. Boring - what with a 72% KO ratio, most of them very impressive quick combination KO's with good power. Yup, right, makes sense. People need to sit back and truly ask themselves why they take such a disliking to someone. I'm afraid often it's clear from the odd invalid excuses it's just plain hatred for a stranger you don't know, it's because you can't accept. You can't accept he's one of the best then, one of the best ever HW's, that he beat the guys your slightly more a fan of than him, he was cocky doing so sometimes, isn't from your nation and a couple of other things. Frightening hatred, really is. Sad really.

Jesus Christ, lets be ****ing logical, Mike Tyson, at 19 years old, with Cus as his trainer would have ended up making lewis look like Frazier/Smith/Green etc. Lennox would be ****ing scared the moment he got in the ring, and not to mention, there would be no feeling out rounds, or getting warmed up, with Tysons elite head movement, hand speed, and combinations, wtf would lennox do? Cover up? Come on, with Tysons father in the corner, there is just no way he would make it out of 3 rounds. Lewis had trouble with 35 year old Mike in rounds 1/2 and i think 3 before gaining control of the fight, and not to mention, he easily had one of the best in his corner to help guide him, while Mike had ****ing Panama Lewis (ugh). Had trouble with Tyson? What trouble?The only round Lewis might have lost to Tyson was the first and I'm not even sure about that. After that it was all Lewis and it wasn't even close. Who did Tyson ever beat that came even close to Lewis? If Tyson couldn't knock out Bonecrusher smith, Tony Tucker, Mitch Green(all 6-5 heavyweights) no way he beats Lewis at any point in his career. Also, Tyson had an opportunity to fight Lewis after LL fight with Mercer as a mandatory. But Tyson and Don King paid Lewis 3 million to step aside so Tyson could fight what was percieved as a washed up Holyfield. Lewis was never afraid of Tyson in any way, shape, or form.

People have more respect for Lewis now than they did in 2005 (when this was posted). I've never been a fan of Lewis' style, but as always, many of the responses in this thread are over the top. This is why people shouldn't rush to a conclusion about Wlad until his career is over. A lot of the criticisms of him were also made about Lewis, yet nowadays almost everyone respects Lewis and rates him highly. Much as I love Tyson's fights, I don't think he would beat Lennox prime vs prime. Tyson did have problems against bigger guys who could tie him up on the inside, and the right uppercut that Lewis landed so often vs old Tyson would still have landed vs young Tyson, because that punch will always be effective against a shorter guy who comes forward with lots of head movement. Agreed Tyson was good but instead of people analysing any Tyson match, they instantly say Tyson KO, because of how hyped he was, facing in truth, a lot of bums. Lennox would have been too big, strong and skilled. I believe Lennox is the worst style matchup ever for Tyson , with the exception of Foreman who Cus said no swarmer ( Frazier, Tyson etc ) could ever beat

I think Lennox gets respect. He beat everyone he fought and is definately a top 10 all time HW IMO.

heres a reason to hate the guy, not too many people know about lewis started boxing when he moved to canada, he was trained at the same gym as me GRAND RIVER BOXING CLUB until he decided to go pro, than he went overseas because there isnt much chances for a pro in canada. whatever happened happened but that guy never gave a dime to that lil boys club that got him started, the coach died a few years ago and he never saw him since the day he left. y'know we had fight posters wallpapered around that place from the chuvalo, norton days until now and after he never came back, we never put another one on the wall again. kinda sad to think about. the owner of that gym was a retired janitor he started off takin kids out the school yard fightin into the gymnasium. When it got full he rented out the top of a warehouse in a dirty industrial part of town, the bags were duck taped, the equipment was old and bought used and the fee was 20 bucks a month IF you had it. this guy spent his life doin what he loved, tryin to get kids to go somewhere in life, to think the one kid he got the farthest couldnt even come back to say thanks. I have no respect for the man as a person 1 800 268 7815 Uh, what are you talking about? LL trained under Arnie Boehm at Waterloo Regional Boxing Academy, not at Grand River. Arnie was the one who took him under his wing and was basically like a surrogate father to him – and Lennox repaid him many times over when he made it big, visited him many times right up until his death and attended the funeral too. I’ll be the first to say LL could be a pompous moron at times, but he never forgot his roots. Sorry you never saw him at your club, but then, what do you ever do for him? (besides post made-up crap about him... ;) )

I just had to add somthing here, another reason lewis gets no respect from me is the whole retirement after his embarassing fight with klitchko. he shoulda been knocked out, just one more fight wheres he's unprepared and takes the easy way out. it took him so long to get up to professional calibre and when he did the only reason he got noticed was because the division was in shambles. I agree mike tyson has a hard time with tall guys who know how to box and they could have replayed that fight a 1000 times and mike prolly woulda lost everyone because he didnt have cus and that fury that was a mike tyson trademark in the early days BUT seeing theres only 1 year between them, I would have to say ANY match up pre 87 would have been a deffinite KO in under 3 for tyson. 4 SURE! and that dosent say much for lewis. lastly this comment had me spoke on "A young Tyson was 12 rounds of punishment" actually tyson was so much punishment that it took 32 fights before ANYONE went 12 rounds with him. 1 more reason the legend of tyson will far outlive the man

Lennox was a bitch, he stayed in the amateur ranks out of fear of tyson in the late 80's even though he was older than tyson. he waited till tyson was 35 years old and way past it to fight him. he waited until Holyfield was friggin 37 to fight him. he wouldn't fight bowe in 93 unless he got purse parity, even though bowe was the UNDISPUTED champ, which is rediculous!! he was a pussy who fought bums until all the great fighters of his era got old and then he stepped in and made a false legacy for himself. you wouldn't even mention his name in todays times if he had fought a prime tyson bowe and holyfield, he would have lost to all of them This reason right here is why i dont like Lennox, he waited..and waited..and waited...

I actually think Lennox sounded Canadian. I respect him but I think he's very over-rated by American's. That was an unexpected answer but I agree 100% Unimpressive in his wins, disappointing losses, and cheats by holding his opponents whenever they get close enough to throw a punch. No worse then Ruiz in the holding department. He has a jab and is taller so he doesn't have to grab his opponent as much. You shouldn't be a champ if all you do is jab and move away from the opponent and throw 1 or 2 right hands a round. Especially when you are supposedly the power hitter and the bigger man. Watch a Tua and Holyfield fight and you won't even finish it. you'll fall asleep or throw it away. Talk about ducking people, Lewis did it obviously but Steward knew Lewis had no chance against Byrd or Ruiz. With Byrd, Lennox has to chase him and has nothing to grab or hold and look incompetent. Against Ruiz, Ruiz teaches Lennox how to hold your opponent. He's the hold master and trendsetter. Steward knows his stuff and protects his fighters.

Mike Tyson would not have blown out Lewis ever. Tyson, even in prime had trouble with tall guys who could box. How would Tyson have gotten inside Lewis' long jab. Lewis is a huge guy with tremendous skill. He is also a very smart fighter. He wouldn't just stand there and let Tyson pound him. A Tyson-Lewis fight would have been a very good fight. Tyson fanatics can't seem to grasp the fact that Tyson was always beatable. They want to live in the "baddest man on the planet" dream world. Tyson in prime was incredible..i'm not saying he wasn't...but to say he would just blow out Lewis is not true imo. I'm in Cali, so I don't care which country he abandoned or what Boys club he blew off. I'm talking in the ring.

no way lewis would be out in 3 against a prime tyson I think that LL's size and jab would have cause Tyson some serious problems. Out in 3?? Maybe, IF tyson could land anythign on him.
