Sturm is far too one dimensional to beat Taylor. All Sturm has is a great jab, like Winky Wright, but Taylor has arguably just as good a jab, as well as an infinitely greater assortment of punches. He also has far better movement and puts his punches together. Sturm might be able to hang with Taylor for a few rounds, but Taylor would start to land combos and eventually outjab the jabber. Taylor by late TKO or UD.
I've seen Taylor against Bunema, Marquez, Joppy, and Eduoard...and his jab isn't as good as Sturm's.
If you're seriously saying that Taylors jab is better than Holmes' and Quarteys' then this discussion is over cause thats a joke.
I don't agree with you here bro.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I think it's just as off base to compare Sturm's jab to Quartay's.
I've seen both, and I'd take Taylor's jab hands down.
He does push it out at times, but there's been fights where he averages 30 - 60 jabs per round thrown. Some of those are stiff eye busting jabs.
I think Sturm has a great jab also, but I think Taylor's is quicker and carries more power.
in a couple weeks if Taylor is able to defeat Hopkins this debate shall pretty much be answered, Sturm's chances will then be perceived as slim. However, it should be an intriguing match-up that HBO should try to make with Sturm being already beaten by Taylor in the Olympics trying to avenge that loss in the pro's ala Cotto(defeating Abdullaeve) or Taylor keeping him on check like Forrest did to Mosley.
From the 4 fights you've mentioned only Bunema fight Taylor used his jab, the last 3 fights Taylor didn't use too much Jab. If you actually think that Quarteys jab is better then Taylor, then I think you need to get your eyes checked. Taylor will destroy Quarteys. Quarteys sure looked great in his last fight.
I never said anything about the prospects of a Quartey/Taylor fight because that's not what the argument is about and I know Taylor would beat Ike now.
Taylor used his jab often in both the Joppy and Marquez fights as well and it was a nice jab, but he tends to flick it out there and backhands/slaps with it a lot. Taylor likes to position himself at an angle where he could get the most range out of it, but that limits it's power.
Quartey and Sturm both fire it from a centered position and use more of their legs and body behind the punch. Sturms game is based on firing that hard disruptive jab and then going into that shell-like defense with his arms up high and elbows tucked. Taylor likes to keep his body at an angle so the flicking jab can land at long range, and then he can quickly recover with his reflexes to block/slip punches in return. Taylor uses his jab more for the purpose of setting up other big combos or punches, whereas Sturms jab takes the heart out of his opponents and discourages them from sticking with their gameplan.
Sturms jab>Taylors jab
Taylor has never the best jab in boxing currently and even if he puts more power into his jab then Sturm, Sturm's Jab is better.
Sturm W UD12 Taylor if they would fight now.
Dude, I've seen both Quartey and Holmes. Homes did have great jab for an heavyweight, but I've seen 8 for 9 fights from Taylor & I'm telling you cannot find a better jab then Taylor, it's has good as it gets. The thing about Taylor he doesn't use his jab in every fight, sometimes he brawls & likes to take you out, Tyson style! Try to see some more fights from Taylor & I think you will agree with me.
I've seen Taylor against Bunema, Marquez, Joppy, and Eduoard...and his jab isn't as good as Sturm's.

Taylor puts much more power into his jab. No contest! Taylor best Jab in boxing today & it is one of the best I ever seen.
Wow you haven't seen many great jabs then. Taylor constantly flicks his jab, and has been warned for backhanding, among other things many time. Sturm has a great jackhammer jab just like Quartey and Holmes before him.
I don't know about the best in the sport, but it's better than Sturms':
I disagree. Sturms is much like Quarteys in his prime. He puts more of his legs and bodyweight into the jab, thus making it very stiff and disrupting. Taylor kind of flicks his out there.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. Sturm's claim to fame is beating De La Hoya, who is garbage as far as I'm concerned. If Taylor beats Hopkins, I don't think Sturm would be considered a threat whatsoever against Taylor.
i'm not so sure, there's lots we don't know about taylor, he's a good prospect but he's never fought anyone even as good as sturm. i don't see this being an easy fight for taylor, all the bums he's beaten so far, like Joppy who ran around the ring holding his balls, didn't have a jab, they didn't have solid fundamentals. sturm doesn't have power but his jab is as good as taylor's, and i think if trained to fight different - more aggressive than he was against dlh, he'll give taylor a tough fight, maybe even take a split decision. taylor isn't a one punch KO artist, he has good power but not devastating. sturm could survive the tough rounds but he MUST move his hands and throw a lot more punches than he did against dlh, and all behind his solid left jab
dido.....
taylor has fought joppy which is his biggest step up. not taking anything away from that joppy is a former champion, has sum skill, but this was a joppy that came after a 1 year layoff, lost his last fight to hopkins and so forth. sturm has fought sum decent gyz. none r 3243-0, but i mean sum decent quality opponents.
if we look at there last 5
taylors last 5
edouard - (16-0-2)TKO3
joppy - (34-3-1)decision 12
raul marquesz - (35-2)tko 9
alex bunema - (24-3-2)TKO 7
alex rios - (23-4-1)TKO 3
granted he has 4 KO's during that span but i mean those gyz for the most part suk. edouard was nothing huge. joppy and marquez were past their high time.
sturms last 5
sendra - (28-2-1) UD12 (WBA elminator
schenk - (36-1) KO2
cherifi (35-10-1) TKO3
frazier - (30-5-3) - UD12
DLH - (36-3) - loss UD12 (lots off ppl thought he won)
cherifi was ye kinda crappy - but he had 5 challenges for the title, and was also a WBC middlweight champ for a bit. so in ranking the last 5, i gotta say the odds go to sturm
if this fight were to happen from my perspective right now, i think sturm will win a narrow decisoin. taylor is good, but i think a good jab will send him back to much. after his fight with hopkins i might change my outlook on things
dam i wrote a lot, hope i get karma for this
Taylor would murder sturm. First off Sturm does not have the power to get Taylors respect. And his defensive style of covering up the head and get worked to the body will not work either Taylor hits much harder than Dlh. Taylor ko in 7 or less ;)
