When Phillips punched, & made Ike punch with him, he was winning handily. He hit & hurt Ike with big shots.
But, he fell asleep from 3-9 (came alive in 9)....& pretty much gave those rounds to Ike.
Ike deserved to win, but it was Phillips' fight to lose.....& he did just that !
I personally think that if anybody lost that fight it was Phillips' corner, losing it for Phillips. In the middle rounds when Quartey was clearly dominating, Verno's corner kept telling him that he was winning these rounds, was pulling away in the fight, needed another round just like that, blah, blah, blah. So when Verno floored and really hurt Quartey in the ninth he thought that he had just put the icing on the cake. As a result of this he did not really go after Ike, instead choosing to avoid doing anything that could be stupid and get knocked out. However, it was obvious to everybody except Verno's corner that Phillips was behind in the fight and needed to press for at least another knockdown and at best a KO. Instead he did not force the action and ends up losing a close decision... Worst job out of a corner that I have seen in a long time. Especially when Johnson's corner would be brutally honost with their fighter just a few moments later...
Snap out of it.
"Unfair" is not a term that could be used in regards to this fight. If anything, Phillips may have earned a draw, but no way did he win when Ike swept 3-8 and won 12 definitivly.
Yes he won the 12th round.. In a 10 round fight!
Good One, I see the name suits you very well
I thought quartey won but the second knockdown should have been ruled a knockdown there was some stepping on the other guys foot in there but the punch was the think that knocked quartey off balance. In the case of how the judges scored it phillips got robbed because it wouldve been a draw.
Ike deserverd that decision..what are some of u guys smoking...Phillips won 1,2, then lost 3,4,5,6,7,8, then wont the 9th 10-8 then lost the 10th.. so Ike definatley won that fight people get delusional when some one gets knocked down they must forget about the rest of the fight
Ike willl never last againest any premiere 154 pounders. He should be smart and come back to Welterweight,he does have some nice power there. But on a positive side he did look good for 5 years off.
Verno Phillips is a premier 154 pounder homey...and Quartey fought him in his 2nd fight back. I don't think you understand what kind of a step up in class this was for a natural 147 pounder who has been out of the game for 5 years...

He didn't win that one on my card, but he could have gotten a draw if they called that second knockdown properly. Tough break. Should have fought a hard 12 to make sure. I say rematch!
I think it should have been ruled a draw, both fighters looked good. But I think Verno was the busier fighter for the most part. Ike won the middle rounds for sure but with Verno winning the first couple and the couple at the end with the knockdown it should have been a draw. I like both fighters and it was a great fight that I thought neither fighter should have went home with a loss.

it was 10 rounds, not 12.
Did you guys catch the look on Philips' face when they read the decision? He was completely shocked. Trainer no tell him truth.
