Mike Tyson at age 19 with Cus in his corner is simply unbeatable. The ability to load offensive power while evading all danger is what Mike Tyson had (physically) mastered as is the essence of the art of boxing. With Cus as the brains of what combinations of punches to through and in what numbers, for any fighter, standing in Mike's corner; you have the greatest team ever in boxing history.
Mike Tyson is a beatable fighter, he always was, He was just scary thats why fighters couldn't beat him. but now he is finished and people should get over their tyson obsession.
When people say cus they also mean rooney. When cus died tyson still had rooney for a lil bit.
Yeah, Tyson had Rooney for a little bit, and then he fired him. Rooney didn't die, and Tyson never rehired him. And Tyson has never said firing Rooney was a mistake. I'm not going to get into this conversation too much, since I already gave my opinions in the "Who's better Tyson or Holyfield" discussion, but it continues to amaze me the type of things people will say to keep the Tyson myth going.
Plain and simple: Tyson was not nearly as good as he looked. He was a great physical specimen who could absolutely demolish good opposition, but he never had the ability to win a match in which he had to overcome adversity. This is why at no time in Tyson's career could he win against one of the top 15 heavyweights of all time. Not when he was 18, 20, 25, or whatever age, and not when he had Cus, Rooney, or anyone else in his corner.
The guy died. He didn't take away "Jedi powers" he gave to Mike when he died. It's skills you learn and have to keep sharp. Cus got him skills and Rooney keep him as sharp and focus as long as he could. Whatever you learning in the ring doesn't magical disappears, it slowly erodes and tht what happen to mikey....
The fact is no one could control or focus Tyson and tell him what do after a while, maybe not even Cus if he was alived. Fame and fortune is not for everyone. Cus personally could have never handled it himself.
Cus was a looney too and no one could tell him what to do.
Doesn't make sense
Tyson had his biggest wins after Cus D'Amato died. He was just as good after Cus's death as he was before, he has also been beaten several times after Cus died. There is no logic to the claim that he was unbeatable.
I remember watching a young Mike do that crazy head bobbing movement as he went inside, that was always so awesome in my opinion. especially when he would explode with those giant left hooks and uppers.
sigh.
where have you gone, mike tyson?
Mike's head movement, hand speed, his ability to rotate on his punches (especially that left hook) as well as his ability to throw short straight punches with precision and power all went away with Cus. If any of you ever actually boxed you would know discipline wins fights. Cus was Mike's decipline. Without Cus in his life at all Mike Tyson becomes a neverheard of "lifer" in the Pen. However extend that discipline further into the young physical phenom's life and I have no doubt he earns universal Top All Time Respect beside Ali. And don't foget about Mike Tyson coming out of Jail with the teachings of Islam, a huge steroid developed body and a shrunken crack head. The guy we've watched lose is no where near the man who could have been Heavyweight Champ at 18 and maybe even 17. Does anyone remember Ali at that age and how much he improved before shocking the world and Liston. Mike screwed Mike no doubt and it was Don Kings sloppy seconds by then too, however, you cannot take away the fact he was physically the greatest wasted talent in professional sports in at least my lifetime.
AWESOME POST. Tyson was an unbelievably gifted fighter. Speed, Quickness, Accuracy, DEFENSE AND STAMINA when he was in his prime. Anybody who watched his early fights would see this. Regardless, wasted talent makes your legacy much worse. I have more respect for a guy like Morales. Someone without blinding speed or power but somehow still gets it done.

his competition was nothin like the ali foreman days get real a bunch of guys would of went undefeated in the rocks day, I'll even name them if you want just give me the word.
marciano unbeatable?lol get the fuk out of here he fought guys who weighed between 155 and 200 pounds.the little boy couldnt even compete with any decent 220 pound plus heavyweight today never mind the all time great ones.tyson would crush any guy who weighed under 200 pounds because they dont have the power to hurt him but in no way was he unbeatable.ali foreman frazier lyle lewis bowe tua ibeabuchi holyfield could of all beat him well holyfield douglas lewis williams and that big white guy did beat him.tyson will always be overrated by not nearly as overrated as marciano.when will you crackheads get this.he weighed 180 pounds.fighting bums who weighed from 155 to 200 pounds dont mean you could do the same thing to true modern heavyweights.but i guess him being white makes him better than all of the black fighters who weighed 180 and tried to move up to heavyweight huh?
They tested Rockys power, he had the power needed to peirce armor, and they said he had the power needed to bench press 1,000 pounds. Tyson, Foreman, Shavers, or any other heavyweight over 200 has never been proven the powerful. You say he couldn't knock out Tyson? Buster Douglas knocked out Tyson, Tyson was never hit cleanly because of head movement.
To claim that anyone is unbeatable is incorrect. I don't care who it is.
Everyone has a kyrponite. Even a young iron mike.
Don king happens, injuries happen, fights catch up to you, pagaent girls happen, money happens, fame, jail time, lack of training for a bum fighter, or having a bad day against a guy on a good day.
The fact is Tyson is what he is and maybe that was because of his limitations. He had the tools to fight and dominate but not to deal with all that other stuff in life that got in the way.
In the end, that is why he is, where he' at today.
Just like McCall or Ike Ibeauchi, those guys had a chance but blew it because they were mentally ill. It's sad but its part of a package.
I'm sick of people saying "What Mike Tyson could've been." He is where is, stop making excuse for the guy. WWII happen to Joe Louis, Marciano. People die in your life and stuff happens. You have to deal with it. Mike couldn't deal with what was infront of his life. He ain't making any excuse for it anymore, so why are other people? Mike knew his fate, he just been trying to pay the bills and ditched that legacy stuff out the window a long time.
Marciano is my favorite heavy but his weakness, 3 min rounds. That guy need 12-15 rounds of fighting to wear you down. 8-10 round fight and a good boxer would've beaten him. Marciano did lose, in amateur fights, 6 rounds fights.
tyson with cus was invcinsible.. untouctable.. unbeatable.. above all any hv of all time.. he was the greatest, fasted handspeed, unbelieveble combinations.. and deadly punches.. he would play with prime holyfield, frazier and foreman like a kid.. ;)
To claim that if Cus was around that Tyson would be invincible is assinine. All that would have done is delayed the inevitable. You see, Mike wasn't Cus's first heavyweight champ. Floyd Patterson was. And Cus knew if Floyd tangled with Sonny Liston, Floyd would get beat. Cus knew what his fighter's weaknesses were. So they ducked Sonny until Floyd finally insisted on fighting Sonny. And the rest is history.
Would Cus let Tyson fight Douglas? Who knows, but I suspect he might have been more than a little nervous with the circumstances. As a good lawyer does, so does a good trainer, don't ask a question that you don't already know the answer to. With Buster's Mom dying and his reputation of being and up and down fighter with the skills to beat Tyson, maybe enough questions would have been raised to cause concern. Cus knew what he had in Mike, a one dimensional fighter with serious flaws.
The concept of Mike Tyson physically at age 19 to twenty whatever is remarkableand capable of any demands. With Cus in his corner disecting opponents weakness's I would say matching up this dua up vs. any in boxing history, including any champion, and Mike walks through him; because he can fight 12 rounds and no one stays standing that long in a "young" Tyson fight and wins rounds. Ali is always the Ultimate test vs anyone and could win at anytime he was "the greatest" for real and Marciano another very short Heavyweight would be the only other's I'd be really worried about Mike getting K'O'd by. Foreman was easily disectable as was Frazier and Norton. Previous eras had a different style all together espicially bareknuckle and is hard to compare. Regardless Mike n Cus are the best one two punch I have ever seen in the Heavyweight division.
Tyson was great in his prime 1988-1989, but he couldn't beat just anyone. Tyson was scared to death to fight an old George Foreman at his prime. He flat out refused to fight George, so that tells me Ali, Frazier, Marciano would have no problem disposing of Mike. Put Mike up against a blown up light heavyweight like Spinks though and watch out.
Well, the topic here is Tyson at 19 with Cus in his corner. He didn't fight these guys until later... At 19 he fought bums. He was awesome of course, but they were still bums.
Further, Tyson was not unbeatable at 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 or whenever. He looked great and could beat the living daylight out of mediocre foes, but unbeatable? Please. Ali would destroy him, and so would a lot of other past greats.
Cus died in 1985 dude. Rooney was his protege. The point is Tyson fought all those guys when he was still with the Cus crew (Rooney Clayton etc..)
Yeah except for one thing I have to say in Tyson's defence. James Bonecrusher Smith,Tony Tucker,TNT Tubbs,James Quick Tillis, Jose Ribalta, Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas are by no means bumbs.
