March 1997 when interviewing Floyd Mayweather Jr., Ring Magazine asked him what he was going to do before he got his first world title fight. He replied, beat the likes of Arturo Gatti, Genaro Hernandez and Azumah Nelson. He also added it would take 16 fights for him to become world champ. Mayweather was only off by 1 fight as he beat Gernaro Hernandez October 3rd,1998 by way of TKO in the 8th. The other men he listed in Arturo Gatti and Azumah Nelson were next on his list. The once great Nelson retired before ever facing Floyd Jr. and Thunder Gatti had just lost all three of his fights in 1998. Two of them to un accomplished "Mighty" Ivan Robinson and one two fellow Italian Angel Manfredy. These three losses took the Gatti vs Mayweather fight off the table, labeling Gatti as a journeyman fighter who had nothing left in his career.
Fast foward past the beating taken from Oscar De La Hoya and the first war with Micky Ward, Gatti was on a fast track to nothing. Then came former boxing champion and now trainer Buddy McGirt. Buddy took Gatti and made him back to top form many people would say but look closer into the fights that he had with Buddy McGirt. The two wins of Micky Ward (nothing more then a journeyman brawler, looking to make some extra money) where both wins for Gatti. Gatti then moved on to former Italian champion Gianluca Branco. These two were fighting for a vacated title that had been stripped of Kostya Tyszu. Branco considered a good italian fighter was dismantled by Gatti in a UD. Branco was never really anything more than a euro champ with lack luster ring skills. Say what you want but the WBC wanted a warrior/brawler who exicted the fans to be their new champion. Thats why the set Gatti up with a half ass fighter in Branco. To give Gatti a legacy they set him up with Lenoard Dorin. Another euro fighter. Undefeated with no one under his belt and a draw to Spadafora. People use that draw to claim his greatness but majority of boxing writers believe that The Pittsburg kid was a mafia tool to get back into boxing who had a very padded record. Next on task for Gatti was Jesse James Leija. A good fighter sure whos only big wins came over Azumah Nelson. Jesee out boxed a prospect and bareley held onto a Split Decsion in order to fight Gatti. He was 38 years old and way over due to be knocked out by any fighter at 140. This is what comes in to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. June 25th.
Floyd Mayweather Jr after his title victory over Hernandez went on to fight Angel Manfredy stopping him in 2 rounds. The same man who beat Gatti only a few months earlier. Time and time again Floyd has proved that he is truly great and still gets lack of popularity from the everyday boxing fan.His wins over Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo twice,Carlos Hernandez,Jesus Chavez, Phillip N'Dou,and Chop Chop Corley have all been shown to us but it still remains that only true boxing fans agree how much talent he has and how great he really is. He's been compared to a prime Roy Jones Jr and the most skilled boxer overall since the days of the 80's middleweights and Muhammed Ali. Perfectly said by Emamuel Steward and Roy Jones Jr, "The only person that can beat Floyd is Floyd". With all of his past legal troubles, and the distracton of his dad training Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd has over came a lot. He will truly show the world on June 25th (his first PPV headliner) how great he really is.
People say that Floyd is going to loose because he runs his mouth and is going to take Gatti lightly. Getting paid 3.1 million plus bonuses from the selling of the ppv makes you not only run your mouth to help get the tickets sold out on the first day but also to get people to buy the ppv. Floyd has used Gatti not to be a tough fight but to help him become a superstar to the public. He is going to run through Gatti and move on to bigger paydays and even bigger fights. Hes all buisness when he steps in that ring and will prove it to the world watching.
"I'm going to beat him, I'm going to talk to him while I beat him, I'm going to talk to the reporters and announcers while I beat him, and in between rounds, I want to borrow his cell phone so I can talk to a real live Arturo Gatti fan while I beat him."-Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Come June 25th, this truly is the last day we will see Arturo "Thunder" Gatti.
I dont understand why people hate Mayweather so much..yea he talks alot but not as much as Muhammed Ali did..they both have something in common..they both have backed up their talk..they've walked the walk..PBF..is one of the most skillful boxers out there today...respect
hey sisforshaq what u seem to have left out of ur article was PBF's "impressive" record at 140. Hmmmm lets see, PBF was hurt by the pillow punching Corely(who is a good boxer, but no power and no killer instinct to end a fighter after hes hurt em, and Cotto fans should remember too ur not gettin off the hook either).
And his last fight was, Henry Brussels, need I say more?? You talk all that bullshit you want about Gatti's opponets but at the 140 class I'll take Millet, 3 brutal fights w/ Ward, Dorin, Branco, and Leija, over just 2 fight w/ Corely and Brussles.
140 is gonna be a whole different world for PBF, Gatti is by far not the best boxer pbf will face, but Gatti will be the biggest and the most powerful puncher. I saw you question Gatti's power before, you need to look no futher than Leija who had been in the ring with both Kosta Tyszu and Gatti and Leija said Gatti hits harder.
Hey but u might have a point, u brought up that pbf said lightin strikes and thunder just makes a noise. but what u have seemed to forget is that that thunderous noise your gonna hear come june 25 is the leather crakin off pbf's dome and body.
I don't know about that much noise being heard from Gatti but there's likely to be a lot of wind from him missing Floyd!
The only noise we're likely to hear will be unintelligible from Gatti(as usual) at the press conference after the fight as he tries unsuccessfully to explain wtf happened.
His memory will be a little clouded.

u never know what could happen 1 punch from gatti could make floyd a lil sleepy, but i doubt that floyd would let that happen. i think floyds boxing skills will be to much 4 gatti and floyd will win by tko. FLOYD DONT GET CAUGHT OR ITS GOOD NIGHT!!!
I hope Gatti knocks PBF out but I think its really unlikely unless Floyd decides to stop moving...never know though....I can't stand Mayweather's attitude, even though he is one of the best P4P. But I watch his fights hoping that he'll get ko'd so I guess it generates $$$....kinda like heels in pro wrestling...you watch them to see them lose....PBF will lose eventually but it could be awhile (unless he fights Tszyu or Judah in the near future)...for the record I can't stand Judah either
Gatti has fans not cuz of his skills but because he;s te single fighter in our era of boxing the defines heart and will. And ur making it seem like being a Gatti fan is not respecting boxing because he is not as skilled as others? I dont see being a fan of a man who is undefeated in the ring but has hit women in his past and has had dozens of legal troubles and runs his mouth like he has beat Ali or something. It is unlikely Gatti will win, true, but he wont go out like a bitch. If you really think Floyd will fight an exciting fight if its up to him, than your dead wrong. I am not a fa at all of PBF but respect the mans skills but come June 25 i hope Gatti catches him or rushes him in the late rounds (when he knows he is behind and needs a ko) and TKO/KO's PBF once and for all. If Floyd wins this fight,it is not him proving himself. We will have to see who he fights after Gatti (if he wins) to see how much of a man he his cuz PBF has not beaten anyone really good at this weight and Harris,Kostya or even Margarito, judah and Mosley are out there (if he moves up) waiting to shut him up.
Alright then, just making sure thats all. I respect your view I just dont think its going to happen anytime soon. ( Floyd losing in that way or at all)
...When I first saw this kid fight I thought he was gonna be one of the best ever and I haven't changed my opinion. My only concern with Floyd is his chin and his fragile hands. If he ever gets into a war with anoyone even close to his skill who can also punch then I think he will be in trouble. I don't think Gatti can challenge him but there is probably a fighter or two that could. Floyld doesn't need to talk the trash he does and I think his yes men are swelling his head too much. If he gets into a war with a quality opponent, gets hurt, and then survives then I will give him his full props and call him one of the best of all times. IMO somebody is gonna catch him and hurt him and then it's gonna be lights out and the curtain will be raised. How many guys do you think are scared of Roy since he got beat by Tarver and nearly killed by Johnson? If Floyd ever gets tapped good then it will be over for him too. In or out of his prime.
...Who said anything about him dying?? Ever see anyone twitch from getting KO'd? If I wanted to see him dead I would have just come out and said it and not masked it with "see him twitching". I would never want to see any boxer die in the ring. Not even Tyson

Not going to happen, and to say a boxer dieing in the ring is a little ridiclous. Just cause he runs his mouth doesnt mean he should die in the ring.

....Yeah, and so fucking what?? What does that do for Floyd if he beats Gatti? Let that little suspect chined poser step in with Kostya and talk that trash and he will also be doing the chicken dance. Gatti is nothing special but I bet Flowyd runs from him for at least the first 3 or 4 rounds. God I hope Gatti wins this fight and knocks that fuckers head right off. Oh to see that guy twitching on the canvas. What a Kodak moment that would be.
I can understand you not liking Floyd, as I am not a huge fan myself, but you cannot question the mans talent. He beat both Corrales and Castillo (both guys who are top 10 P4P fighters) and has looked good at Jr. Welter by handeling Chop Chop which boxing's "future star" Miguel Cotto was unable to do. He stood up to alot of big punchers and is at a weight class which he is probably too small for, so I am not sure if I would call him suspect chined. Besides, Gatti is the equivalent of that dirt that collects in the bottom of the dust-pan after multiple uses. Make what accusations you will about Floyd's class, but Gatti is fifty times worse.
