I just watched the fight with Larry Holmes, and this kid shouldn't have even been in the same arena as Holmes. He did even worse against Tyson. Was there ever a fight where he showed any potential for greatness? Holmes just embarresed the crap outta him. It was funny as hell!
Marvis was a good fighter, but personally, I always felt the cruiserweights was the best place for him. It's one thing to beat a Broad or Smith, but I can't imagine him beating someone like a Tubbs, Page, or Dokes.
bingo, but the cruisers had no money value for him. Papa Joe wanted to make him some money becuase he was obviously undersized to compete at a high level against heavys. Marvis was a very solid boxer, but had very little pop. He out boxed the Bonecrusher and Broad. Very nice wins for him. If I'm not mistaken, he also decisioned Joe Bugner? With his skills he could out box the big slow guys, but never would he ever been able to beat the skilled heavys.
I think his biggest accomplishment was being able to stay focused and outbox Broad without being distracted by James' "man-boobs". :D
I've only seen one of Marvis Frazier's fights, and it was the Tyson fight. Marvis had about a snowball's chance in hell of beating Tyson. He could of got hurt real bad. Old poppa Joe musta been a real hard case.
I fully agree Dynamite! Marvis was a small heavyweight, very skinny, perfect build for crusier or even lightheavy. i think he was made into a heavyweight because of who his father was and they knew they could market him in the heavyweight division. But, alas, he wsn`t big enough to take it and wsn`t good enough to avoid it!

Joe Frazier was a great fighter and champion.
It sickened me when I read about his dealings with Muhammed Ali. Ali, after his ban from boxing....had nowhere to go, and was low on money. Frazier lent him 1 mil and shortly after that..........Ali was badmouthing him:
IE:
I call Joe "the mummy". because he is too slow. Here come the left.......RRRAAAAARRR....here come the right.....RRRRAAAR. hes too slow man....im pretty....
I understand he was promoting the fight, but publicly humiliating someone like that..........on top of calling him uncle tom.....makes me think of who I would have been reuting for.
the mummy jibe was against george forman before the zaire fight. do your reserch.
Well, marvis did beat Bonecrusher Smith back before Smith became world champ so i think he had some skill. The Holmes fight should have never been sanctioned, Marvis had only 10 fights on his record and wasn`t anything special to warrent a fight with Holmes. i think daddy Joe feed him to the dogs early as it discourage marvis if he wasn`t good enough!
Anyone read Smokin' Joe's biography? I remember him saying he thought it'd be best for Marvis to "take the money" against Tyson, rather than get bashed about for a few years without making any real cash.
Damn, let's hope Marvis can't read.
I hated Holmes when I first saw that, I thought it was a crappy thing to do. But then when I watched it again, it seemed as if his "winding punch" was actually him calling the ref to stop it, which puts Holmes in a completely different light.
Oh,Run - sorry to contradict, but the Mummy was his routine for Foreman. Having said that, his routine for Joe was worse.
Oh, I thought Holmes was showboating while he was winding up the glove. I remember watching the Jones/Woods fight where Jones does that to call the ref to stop the fight, the corner ends up throwing in the towel, though..

That's what I call ungrateful. The point is, he didn't have to do that to sell tickets.

The Holmes fight was very embarrasing. That one-two combo Holmes knocked him down with was picture perfect...a funny part in the fight was when Holmes was winding up his right hand before he'd hit 'em...He knocked the mouthpiece out of poor Frazier's mouth at one point..
Did you see the kind of smile Joe Frazier had on his face while hugging his son? It looked like in his mind he was saying, "Damn, you just got knocked the fuck out.."
Marvis Frazier was a good fighter. He wasn't as helpless and useless as people make him out to be. The skill and talent were there and he definately had potential to be a contender. However, Joe, his trainer/father, tried to make Marvis emulate his style, when he was cearly better as a boxer. Marvis simply wasn't meant to be a swarmer.
That plus the combination of fighting Tyson and Holmes wayyyyy too early led to his demise. Frazier could've had a better career in boxing, and it's a same that all people remember of him were his crushing defeats. He was better than that.
