What was the worst job ever done by a referree? Here are some of my candidates:
1. Joe Cortez, in the fight with William Joppy-Roberto Duran. I think something is seriously wrong with Cortez.
2. Dale Grable, in the Prince Naseem Hamed-Cesar Soto fight. I've seen better refs at amateur shows. He had no business in there with champs. Incompetent.
3. Jersey Joe Walcott, in Ali-Liston II. Who the fuck is the guy from a newspaper to tell Walcott the fight is over?
4. Jack Dempsey, in every fight he officiated.
How about Wayne Kelly in Roy Jones-Richard Hall. I bet Kelly was having a pretty good time watching the carnage, maybe should've spent more time stopping the fight. Kelly needs to get checked out seriously.
Tony Perez The Worst
I never understood why the TV media used to prop this guy...he was the worst I ever saw.
1. Totally lost control of Ali Wepner.
2. About got Ken Norton killed against Gerry Cooney; totally clear across ring.
3. Got Kostya Tszyu DQed against Leonardo Mas; again clear across ring.
4. I think he was the ref for Mercer and Morrison; Mercer almost murdered the guy; again out of position.
Lazy, out of position, arrogant.
The best; Arthur Sr; Larry Hazzard Sr; Stanley Christodoulu; Marty Denkin; Mitch Halpern
thats bullshit. you have to wave it off if they can't respond. otherwise, what is the point of going for a KO in the last 15 seconds of a fight?
If there had actaully been 15 sec's left, then sure I would agree with STeele stopping it. But, since there was only 2 sec's left then no, I dont think he should have stopped it. By the time the two met in the center of the ring the bell would have ended the fight.
I was watching the Gatti-Patterson rematch yesterday, that was simply the worst refereeing job ever. Rudy Battle took away a clean body shot knockdown from Patterson, and gave Gatti time to rest for a low blow call. He was just walking around the fighters telling them to keep their punches up, while they were throwing head shots. He warned Gatti about 20 times for low blows before he took a point away. He called a knockdown against Patterson when a punch didn't even connect. Battle is obviously Gatti's biggest fan.

It was all LOU DUVA!!!!!
TELLING HIM U NEED TO WIN THA LAST ROUND TO WIN THA FIGHT!?
BULLSHIT!! Taylor could've stayed away from him in tha last round n he would've won with a lot less physical problems and his career would be complete
richard steele in the chavez taylor fight he was a chavez fight and taylor was up on his feet and was cool to finish the last few seconds he was still there chavez was lucky meldrick deserved to finish the fight and some refree stole a fight from him usually its the judges who rob you not a the ref poor meldrick now he is messed up in the head because of that
most of jay nady fights are pretty bad, they man " i think is the worst", but i would like to see him ref a ruiz fight, so he could DQ him for holding"
Roger Tilleman was responsible for probably the worst and most biased refereeing performance I've ever seen. When Robin Reid fought Sven Ottke, he was giving Reid warnings just for landing punches, and whenever Ottke got in trouble he made up some reason to stop the fight and warn Reid.
He penalised Reid for infringements he made, whilst only giving Ottke warnings for the same things (which were even more blatant). And when Ottke was knocked down legitimately (it was an obvious knockdown), he just ruled it a slip and basically forced the judges to score what should have been a 10-8 rd for Reid as a 10-8 round for Ottke due to a point deduction (or at best 9-9).
Basically the referee decided who he wanted to win the fight and did whatever was necessary to make it happen. That guy should never be allowed any involvement in boxing again.
Agree entirely with this one. It's one thing hearing about the hometown decisions Ottke was getting but seeing them was unreal. No wonder he was avoiding Calzaghe and never fighting outside Germany.
People say John Ruiz should be penalized for holding in his fights well Raheem was doing just as much holding in the Juarez fight. It was Raheem's fault those points were being deducted. I mean the ref kept warning him and warning him but he still kept holding behind the head. I don't think the ref did a great job or even close to a good job but to be fair if Ruiz should be penalized for holding so should Raheem.
I agree with this. I remember all that and how so many posted how wrong it was for the ref. to take the pt..however, if he was told repeatedly (and he was) to stop doing it, then common sense should have told him that he needed to quit. I mean, the ref. made it clear that that was the only problem he had with him..the only complaint, so that is all he had to do. Stop grabbing him behind the head..pretty simple.
Anyway, i still consider Richard Steele the worse ref out there..what he did wrong (Taylor vs. Chavez..enought said) was bad enough that so far nothing I've seen in the ring since comes close..even after all this time!

Seriously...I was like, "is this shit really boxing?" Roy Jones would be fucked if you werent allowed to measure. I bet that ref is the head of the commission dude.
Measuring is an illegal tactic just not called too often.
i almost threw my plate full of rice and beans at the TV when i heard that cock sucker tell zahir to "not measure" ...
i actually even wrote an email so some dude in the texas state athletic commission. fuqqers never got back to me.

here it goes, RAHEEM WASN'T HOLDING WAY TOO MUCH IN THAT FIGHT.
wudda never guessed u were american indian. i'll toke to that!
I'd say Raheem was holding too much.
Come on Mic the ref was telling him NOT TO MEASURE! I mean WTF is that?!?! Raheem was barely placing his glove behind his head. Ruiz actually hugs and hold his guy...Raheem barely comes close to that.
Like I said I didn't think the ref did even close to a good job but the holding wasn't just barley placing a glove behind the head. He was pushing Juarez head down. As far as the measuring thing I think he was talking about how Raheem was holding out the right hand without throwing a punch. That wasn't a big deal because Raheem wasn't doing it through the entire fight and all the little things were just uncalled for but the holding was just too much.

There is no way in hell you can say Raheem wasn't holding way too much in that fight.
Baya, I'm 100% Alabama-Coushatta Native American.
