Marquez tells Pacquiao to get ready for big war
by Emmanuel B. Villaruel
January 9, 2005
International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico boldly declared that his second fight against Filipino ring star Manny Pacquiao will be a war.
Marquez expressed doubts though on Pacquiao’s readiness to challenge him anew, prompting the Mexican dual champion to dare the General Santos City-native ring punisher not to make any excuses that may derail their February 26 rematch in Las Vegas.
“A postponement isn’t possible. We have an obligation to television and to our fans to be in the ring and ready to fight. We must arrive there in top condition and any last minute protest about an injury, just would not be valid. I’m expecting this second fight will be a war, and I’m preparing accordingly,” Marquez told Boxingscene.com.
Marquez has trained very hard for more than a month now and will start sparring sessions next Wednesday. In contrast, Pacquiao has yet to start his preparations for the highly-anticipated return bout.
Inspite of that, Marquez admits that it’s going to be a tough and great fight ahead.
“It’s going to be one tough fight. I know his style and he knows mine, and I’m sure it’s going to be a really great fight. I’m sure Manny will train hard and not underestimate his current opponent who’s waiting for him up in the ring,” said Marquez.
The two decorated and powerful boxers first clashed on May 9, 2004 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, where Marquez miraculously survived three knockdowns in the first round and went on to forge a controversial split draw with Pacquiao over 12 heats.
Presently, the scheduled rematch is in serious jeopardy as Marquez wants more money for the fight against Pacquiao.
While Pacquiao is guaranteed $900,000 purse, Marquez demanded $1.5 million or double than the $750,000 initially dangled by Top Rank big boss Bom Arum, the handler of Marquez.
Marquez argued that he must get the lion’s share of the purse because he is the champion who will stake not just one but two prestigious belts, but American promoter Murad Muhammad insisted that it is Pacquiao who should receive the bigger paycheck being the main attraction.
I had mellowed?? I can admit that he should be fighting tougher opposition, no problem, but that doesnt mean I've mellowed or think he's a coward, or whatever, for not fighting Pac again right away.
Me neither. Pac poses the biggest threat of all the fighters in consideration. I've already stated that the more sensible thing to do is fight someone like MAB or EM before a rematch with Pac.
i thought you mellowed there for jmm for a while...i guess i was wrong, huh? but i agree with you those 4 are definitely the top dogs in the feather/superfeather and any match between any of them is going to be a big hit...but i i still think that jmm if not fighting any of pac, mab & em is not going to draw a lot of boxing fans into watching the fight, especially if they had to shell some money for it.

if ever JMM will be fighting MAB or EM, he gotta finish first his business with PAcman. Pac earned his way to Morales by beating MAB and by signing a rematch with JMM. JMM havent proven a single thing. the best he had was a draw with a half disabled Pacman. and box his way out in signing the contract by insisting for an impossible purse. just because he got a draw with Pacman doesnt mean he already earned it to brawl with the Mexican legends.
See thats the thing..JMM doesnt HAVE to do anything. Even alot of Pac fans would be perfectly happy if he fought one of the other top fighters instead, for now anyway. How many fight's happen where fans feel that one of the boxers didnt earn the right to be there? Way too many to single JMM out. In the heavy wt. division right now there are pure jokes stepping into the ring for title shots, and they didnt earn it either. Just cause you dont want him fighting anyone else til fighting Pac again doesnt mean alot of others dont. Just cause you dont think he's earned the right to fight any of the top guys (other than Pac) doesnt make it true. Not at all.
Uh, no, not at all. I was saying that each one of them would make a more exciting and difficult fight for him. Him and either of those opponets would be one hell of a draw, for me anyway!
Their styles against his would be too hard to pass up.

not a bad a idea...and whoever wins should fight the winner of pac-em. but i doubt it's going to happen, mab has been ducking jmm ever since. for them he's high risk and low return...and i don't think mab is not going down to feather just to fight jmm and vice-versa.
but it's gonna be interesting if ever this match happens.

Since Marquez isn't fighting pacquiao he should fight MAB.What do you think?
i dont think JMM deserve any shot against the great fighters like MAB, EM or Pac. these guys fights the best. but JMM would rather chose not to fight and knows nothing but to demand for impossible money.
Did you just unconsciously say that Barrera, Pac or Morales is the real draw if he JMM fights any of them?

IF youre asking me (which I'm not sure about) I would definately watch it! :D I like him, alot, and dont think he's a coward, but I will admit that if he wont fight Manny, then he sould atleast fight someone that will be a challenge for him, and Barrera would probably be just that. Stop pussy-footing around with lesser fighters and fight the ones that are capable of knocking him out, or atleast seriously screwing up the game plan. I'm not too interested in watching him out-point some guy in a boring, unchallenging fight, but would love to see how he handles Barrera, Pac and/or Morales. All three of those I'd definately watch!! ;)

Asking what everybody thinks. But your right if he keeps fighting guys like salido he's going to ruin his career.MAB Marquez i think would be a nice fight to see.
Watching him against Salido isnt exactly what I was dreaming about..I'd still watch it just because he is such a good technician, and I love watching them ply their craft. But, I'd much, much rather watch him in there against any of the three I mentioned before. It sucks completely that that may not happen! :(

Well you said it yourself, that JMM claimed that he wanted more money cause he has 2 belts. I was simply not chalking that up to fear the way you did.
Mooks said it best on this thread...if JMM is afraid, then it's of whats on the line and what he has to lose..it's not fear of Pac per say. And, as Mooks also pointed out (what do you know, he's good for something :p :D ) if JMM waits til Pac fights Morales and pac wins (that wont happen either) then JMM has a better chance of getting the money he wants.
I thought this disagreement was over him being a coward, and afraid to fight Manny?? That is the post of yours that I replied to anyway
i know that i've been out for a time but i just want to answer this post. if its not fear of Pac, do you think JMM would ask for the same purse against a rematch with Salido? why would he ask for such demand when fighting Pacman? i was hoping you'd realize that he had fear in losing his title not just because he'll be fighting but rather he'll be fighting PACMAN.
hay joe, how you been? i had not seen you here for a long time...
you're exactly right. i think jmm and nacho made a big mistake asking for more than they could chew. first of all, they figured wrong to justify their demand with the belt because nobody care so much about the belt anymore. (at least they had the ring to blame blame it on). secondly, jmm is not the draw here -- now somebody would argue that it takes two to tango, but pac can also use the same argument and yet he readily accepted what was offered to him. besides i think more people wanted to see pac and his exciting style than jmm's passive counter punching and boring style. the thing is -- jmm & nacho thought they could persuade hbo/promoters to see it their way and didn't realize that the latter (promoters) always have extra tricks in their bag for occasions like this!
it was really a big blunder for the whining duo!Hi buddy! I'm okay and from what I read above, you're not doing too bad yourself! :D Had to attend to some stuff through the New Year celebrations, poor me! So, missed all the action here for a few weeks-- my great loss! :o
I agree with you pal. For Pac, it's seldom about money. He didn't fuss when they told him he's getting a lot less than Erik! Shows the kind of fella he is. Even admitted Erik is one of his idols! ;)
Good to see you again! Great to be back! :D
Ha! Ha! Ha!
Hey, buddy! That JMM picture on your signature does not exactly show a face that could launch a million dollars, does it? :D That face is lucky to be offered the money that he declined to face Pac!
Now he wants to face Vasquez; "persuade" Vasquez. For how much? A quarter of a mil? (Maybe less?)
Say no to 3/4 and say yes to 1/4? Because he deserves more money?
Oh, ok. ;)
He labors from November, skips Christmas in preparation for a fight the purse of which had been agreed on in principle. Then, when everyone has been saying he has the edge by training for so long in the rarefied atmosphere of Mexican mountains, he and Nacho comes up with a purse demand!
Oh, ok.
After the fight is shelved, a reporter writes a piece that says, "finally Marquez is a hit!" then procedes to tell us that Marquez sparred rounds against huge but inexperienced opponents and confesses that Marquez failed to penetrate the "awkward" defenses of one spar mate and "bounced jabs off" another and that Marquez still has much to do. The piece tells us everything except why Marquez "is a hit"!
Oh, ok.
If Pac wins against Morales, that victory shall not mean promoters would up the ante for JMM. It does not follow. What it only means is that Pac can ask for and may get more!
It could even mean that JMM becomes a minor player and be offered less because Manny shall by then be THE MAN to beat.
Marquez and Nacho offered the two feather belts as justification for a raise. But, they should have seen that Morales doesn't wear any anymore and Morales was always THE MAN that Pac wanted to face after Barrera.
If Pac loses to Morales, JMM vs. Pacquiao could not be more attractive than it was just weeks ago and wouldn't attract any more money for the fighters than it did just weeks ago. It may even be seen as less attractive, both ways.
I think, in time, Nacho and Juan will find that they have miscalculated. ;)
With the 1.75 mil in US$, Manny can go home to the Philippines, be (possibly) the richest Filipino sportsman in history and not bother to fight another day. Marquez after Vasquez, shall have to slave on...

what if hbo gave pacman 2.5mill? is jmm he going to backout again? i wonder. Ha! Ha! Ha!
