It was reported on Boxingtalk that this fight might come off. I have let my feelings be known about Vargas. I think he was a very good fighter but Tito ruined him. I also said that he will never be the same and if he faught again then he could be seriously hurt. I think #for# right now Phillips is the much better fighter but the question is what weight will the fight at. I remember everyone was saying that if Vargas came back it would be at 160. If they fight at 154 I would still pick Verno but at 160 it would be much tougher but I would still pick Verno. but who knows, maybe the time off could really help and Vargas could get back to his old self but I doubt it
If I remember Vargas-Trinidad, I even thought Vargas was doing well. Got low blowed whenever he was putting the heat on Trini which I thought was gay. I think DLH ruined Vargas more, simply cuz there was so much hate between the two and it must have badly damaged his pride. In any case, he went in those fights too early. Shoudl have paced himself.
Yup, he shouldve paced him self.
True, and in the De La Hoya fight despite losing did he show signs of being a shot fighter? Not really, Oscar was just the better fighter on the night. He used the jab to wear Vargas down and then hit him on top with his vaulted left hook.
In Vargas` fights after this he hasn`t been in with a great talent but he did what he was supposed to have done, won by convincing stoppage.
Truth is if Vargas is as good as the old, like against Quartey and Wright then he could be an excellent contender in the middleweight division, may even get a rematch with Tito or depending on Hopkins plans a fight with Nard ( I STRONGLY ADVISE VARGAS TO AVOID THIS OPTION!) But the fact is, if Vargas is still a decent fighter, he has it to win something in the middleweights!
He didnt look shot because Oscar isnt that good anymore either. That was one of the most overated fights in history. If there names werent Oscar and Vargas no one wouldve thought that was a great fight. Sure Vargas lost to Tito and Oscar but look at Vargas's other fights. He won them but hasnt looked good in any of them. He wouldve killed those guys before the Tito fight.

I pick Vargas. First I don´t think that he is ruined by Tito (why should he? He did very well!) and he is still a young fighter. Second I do think that Vargas is boxing in a different league (he just lost against Tito and ODLH!).
He's gonna fight Verno Phillips his first fight back? I can't believe he thinks he's ready to go straight to a very good fighter in Phillips his first time back. If Phillips comes in in great shape, which is a big if with Phillips I see Vargas getting beat.
Vargas did excellent Vs Tito even though he lost. But i think Trinidad put the miles on Vargas` clock and De La Hoya blew the engine. I think after these fights with Tito and Oscar his inactivity of late would help him. He hasn`t fought for a while and this has to be good for him and help him recover a bit. I`m not saying that he`s fixed and back to his best but i still think he might be a force in the middleweight division. Lets see how he looks in his comeback fight, then we`ll make a judgement!
another excellent post kimmy!!
i see it the same way but as a vargas fan i'am more hopefull than most!!

The point is that wasnt the same Vargas that lost to Oscar. If Vargas never faught Tito then he wouldve beaten Oscar. He hasnt looked like shit sine the Tito fight and was shot before he even got to Oscar
i agree with the first part of your post but i dont think vargas is shot nowhere near!!
he's young talented got heart and power plus his only two loses were against the very top tier fighter granted both were stoppages but!!
i mentioned on another thread that if the time off gives him the hunger back that he had when he beat quartey and winky wright and he gets the right guidance.
two good wins against the likes of phillips and everybody will soon sit up and take notice!!
Well I don't think he would have beaten DLH at superwelter limit anyway...we'll never be sure of that but watching closely that fight I see Oscar being better in every departement (except raw power). I think Tito'fight made him discover what fear and doubts are, but didn't ruin him physically speaking.
Had vargas fought dlh prior to Tito he would have been better mentally, probably more determined and confident while attacking, but now way it would have made him avoid all those sharp accurate combos from Goldie. Dlh science took him out, not Tito this time
But you could also argue Vargas would have KO him, and that could be right too ;)
I didnt even think that Oscar looked that good in that fight either. I think Oscar has been slowing down for a while and I dont think that he wouldve beaten Vargas on the night that Vargas faught Tito. He was doing real good against Tito but he just couldnt handle the power. After the 1st round he came back and I think that he might was winning or even after 5 or 6 but he chose to fight Tito instead of boxing. Tito did ruin him. He was getting dropped or hurt in every fight after that and he was barley beating guys that he was much better then. The fight against Marshall was horrible. I dont remember if that was before or after Oscar but that was because of Tito. Marshall was a guy who shouldnt even be fighting and I thought he had a good shot at beating Vargas. The guy sounds like Meldrick Taylor

if he fights verno straight away he'll get beat. i agree, i think he was fed to tito too early and has not looked the same since.
people think phillips is a journeyman cos he's got a few losses, but he's a damn good fighter.
well i dont think trinidad ruined vargas de la hoya may of that was much more of a crushing lost to him then trinidad but vargas still has
a juice in his tank and will win his upcoming fight
