After looking at some Toney fights again lately, I am starting to see the possibilities for Toney to become a heavyweight champion.
It is true he has not fought a "natural" heavyweight until now, so the real test (of theory) is still up ahead.
Toney is a smart skillful boxer, knows the tricks, has the experience and the ability to adapt during fights. He is very slick, rolls with blows and blocks punches with arms and shoulders. The only downside with this style is that punches blocked with his shoulders or the glancing blows are sometimes counted by the Judges (both Griffin fights!).
After a clear knockdown by Reggie Johnson (6 weeks after the Nunn war) and (to my opinion) being knocked off balance by RJJ, Tonney never has been down again (and met some hard punchers after that).
He has both heart and toughness; Toney never gives up and against Brooker he did not react when Brooker started aim punches on his hurt arm (and in doing so giving the impression nothing was wrong).
Real knockout power he seems to be lacking on this (and cruiser) weight. His high amount punches do wear people down.
My predictions:
Against Vitali I think him too slick to be hit on long distance. By closing the distance, with inside fighting he will be able to hit Vitali (not much defense there), hurt and cut Vitali and he will be able to stop Vitali in the late rounds.
Against Byrd it would go to the scorecards it think, and will be close.
Against Ruiz, he only have to wait for Ruiz to come, slip the punche(s) and counter. His work inside will wear down Ruiz and Ruiz will be knocked out in the late rounds.
I hope to see one of these (maybe all ;) ) in 2005
James Toney is too small for Vitali. Vitali will use his long arms to keep Toney away.
Vitali has to hit something to keep somebody away.
It was the great Tyson used his small posture as an advantage in his boxingstyle.
comparing williams nad toney is sort of retarded, williams is an average hw at best and james toney is the next greatest natural talent to roy jones jr. my guess is lights out will try to crouch under Big K's jab and move inside then hammer his body, that's what i would try to do if i had to fight him. Big K has never had anyone in front of him, save for Chris Byrd, who can slip and slide the way toney can
People say Toney can just go in and beat Klit to the body. Well easier said than done. Williams tried to get inside and he got hammered for trying. It's not like Williams wanted to fight on the outside, he had no choice coz he coudn't get inside of Klit's long arms. Plus Toney is a counterpuncher. Meaning he fights defensive, and counters shots. You can't really get inside fighting like that. So if they ever meet, it will be pretty one-sided.
Let me retort...Toney and Williams should NEVER be compared. JT is quicker than Williams and doesn't base his defense on blocking punches with his face. He is far slicker and more experienced...he WILL find a way to get inside on Vitali. Of course James won't just simply walk inside of VKs long reach and bang his body...hes gonna have to block and take some of VK's heavy shots to do it...but thats wehere the defense and chin comes into play. As for Toney only being a counter puncher...you obviously haven't seem him fight enough or you just don't want to give him any respect. James can cut the ring off very well and knows how to take the lead in a fight and put pressure on. He did this against Nunn in the later parts of their fight, he did this against McCallum at times, and put the pressure on Booker their entire fight. He just prefers to let the other fighter come pressure him. So if they ever meet...it won't be pretty one-sided.

Toney is shit,Vitali will knock toney out cold!
Sure! Toney did not beat Michael Nunn, Mike McCallum, Iran Barkley, Vassiliy Jirov and did not give Evander Holyfield a beating a la Bowe, and did not basically with one-hand-only win every round against booker. If Toney is shit, where would that leave yourself? ;)
About the vital part, let's see if they meet in 2005. Toney probably being the second in line to face vitaly. Lets hope vitaly does not loose before that. :D

Very nice insightful post. You're right...Toney is the worst fight EVER. Vitali would break him in half.
Williams is a good one, Peters is a bit too Green, he needs a few more skills. Sure he may catch Toney just right, but why risk it. Bring back Larry Holmes... J/K
Its a shame toney didn't get his act together 3-4 years ago! He seems to be falling apart now. He is getting injured more often and he is fighting people 30 or more pounds heavyer then him. If he fights for a title he better do it soon.
KJ ill bet you 200K Toney doesnt even fight a top ten in his next fight. Ill bet you 300K he doesnt face Vitali in 2005? Wanna take either of those bets?
How much in the negative can one become with the points? (or could you lend me some?) :D
The second bet is not up to Toney. It takes two to Tango. And who did Vitaly face after winning the belt).
Yeah what's up with Toney not facing Wlad Klitschko? He loves to yap but does not sign the contract. Toney cannot use the excuse that Wlad is promoted by King and that is the reason he can't get a fight against him.

Hello Eye, I just was wondering if you missed Toney Tucker as much as I do, he added a lot of good insight into the sport that is obviously missing since his ban. I no you two were close, do you guys still keep in touch, maybe have a beer once in a while or what? If so give me his contact info...that was a guy everyone could learn something from and frankly at the time of his ban I was not done learning!

I want to see who Toney is going to fight next. If its another bum I'll totally write him off. He should fight Peters or Wlad, both have been callin him out! But im sure he'll be fighting some third tier guy we never heard of. :(
Toney never ducked any fighter during his career (look at his record!). Another bum? Like Holyfield (still highly regarding, but declining duuring that time)? Like Vassiliy Jirov? Or do you mean Booker, read the below and understand WHY Toney fought the "bum".
Booker and Toney are fighting for the #1 mandatory challenger position in the WBC. Russian giant, Vitali Klitschko, currents hold that belt and Klitschko will be defending his title first againt Tyson-killer Danny Williams on December 11 of this year. Therefore, if Toney wins, he’s earn a shot against the winner of the Williams-Klitschko fight as early as next January.
I really do not see him stopping Vitali. If Vitali fights on the outside, it would probably be similar to the fight with Danny Williams.
Danny Williams is no Toney. Danny Williams is the guy people would use for their comeback...and if he surprisingly wins from Mike Tyson he becomes a legit challenger.
I believe Toney will not let Vitaly fight on the outside.
You are correct The1God. His two fights at heavyweight were against two blown up cruiserweights. One of the two is probably 10 years past his prime and the other never was anything. I will not be a believer unless he can score some wins against legitimate heavyweights. Also, time is really not on Toney's side. He'd better do all this and soon before he becomes too old. By then, it will be "Light's Out" for JT.
You know you are agreeing he should fight a (another) blown up light heavyweight?! :D
"The one that was never anything" was the guy Toney was fighting for the legit challenger spot of vitali's title.
And when Holyfield was beating the crap out of Tyson 7 years ago, I recon him to be still in his prime.
Also I do not believe Vitaly to be somewhere near prime Holyfield. (Who did vitaly beat? ‘cept him looking good against Lewis). So no need for Toney to be able to beat a prime holyfield.
But I do agree the clock is ticking for Toney. ;)

If he fight Moorer people like FibreOptic (see above) will say he only fights blown up cruiser and light heavy weights.
:D
why is fat willy back, i thought he was banned?
I too think Toney needs a real HW fight, I think Moorer would be the best option for him at this point. They are both moving up in the ranks (Moorer for the fourth time) or Golata, Oquendo, or Danny Williams! Any of the formentioned fighters would be a stepping stone as well as some proving ground. I would hate to see him jump in right now and fight one of the belt holders (Except Brewster)
Brewster would be an easy fight for most of the top to mid teir IMHO
