I want to say Glen Johnson. Let's face it. He has 9 losses on his record. He seems like a push over journey man. From what I hear, 5 of his 9 losses were close decisions on his opponents home turf that probably should have gone the other way. Two of his draws should have gone his way. I did not give him a chance against Roy Jones. He kept putting on pressure and did not relax for one second and scored a 9th round KO! Some will argue that Roy Jones did nothing in that fight. Then Johnson goes up against Tarver. I was rooting for Johnson, but I figured Tarver would give him a boxing lesson. This ended up being another close fight that could have gone either way. Johnson kept putting on pressure to win a split decision. If someone told me at the start of 2004 that before the year was over, Johnson would have back to back victories against Jones and Tarver, I would have laughed in their face.
I would have Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales tied for the title as co-Fighters of the Year. In their third (last?) encounter, both fighters slugged it out with unmatched intensity and will power. From the opening bell 'til the last round both boxers gave everything they've got. Both threw powerful punches and both showed granite-like chins that prevented knockdowns. The fight, with all of its hype, also proved to be the fight of the year. Not a single round was a waste!
Hats off to Barrera and Morales!!!
I think Tarver beat Glen, and Roy lost it. Corrales clearly and convincingly beat Casamayor and Freitas. He made the undefeated Freitas say No Mas. Fighter of the year = Chico Corrales.
this was a pretty good year for boxing.
1: MAB
2: Corrales
3: Johnson
4: Tarver (he beat roy easy, me and everyone else except those 2 judges had him ahead of Johnson.
5: Jeff Lacy
How could anyone pick a journeymen that just beat an average at best fighter as fighte of the year? So since vitaly beat up DW should he be fighter of the year for beating a bum? I guess we should give it to gatti also for beating 2 average fighters.
I think that Corrales should get the nod. He beat cassamayor and P4P favorite Freitas. Hell he made POPOP quit!!! To make journeymen johnson " WHO IS NOT EVEN THE BEST LT HEAVY" fighter of the year, just makes a mockery of how corrupt boxing really is!
Tell me,how can a fighter that has already won a World Title and has beaten the Top2 American Lt.Heavyweights be labeled a Journeyman?
Corrales is a canidate but I think he finishes in 2nd.The Casamayor fight could have gone either way and Acelino Freitas was overrated IMO.

Many fighters each year deserve a look in at fighter of year. There are up and comers we dont even know about who may have been on a huge turn around or run of consecutive wins. On a global scale, JOHNSON, HE CAME OUT OF NOWHERE!!! FULL CREDIT TO JOHNSON! he was always a champion, its just that no-one gave him a chance, even looked at his credentials, his only KO loss was to the great Bernard Hopkins.
Any of these fighters :
Diego Corrales - impressive wins over Casa and Freitas
Glenn Johnson - upsets over RJJ and Tarver
Cory Spinks - schooling of Mayorga and beating Zab Judah
