Why not, he is technically the undisputed lightheavyweight champ and he`s a nice guy. He beat Clinton Woods ( average ) Royjones ( remember...he was the second coming of Ray Robinson a few yrs back ) and Tarver ( the man for KO`ed the second coming of Robinson in 2 rds ).
Glen Johnson has worked the hardest and won three world title fights where he was an underdog. Give it to him, fighter of the year!
No Question it has to be Glen Johnson for fighter of the year. I didn't think Glen would be able to pull this fight out between Tarver. He proved me and a lot of other people wrong. The way he outworked Tarver and was backing him up two things I didn't think he could do against Antonio. I hope there is a rematch but Glen Johnson has to be the fighter of the year this year.
I would pick Deigo Corrales as the fighter of the year, but Johnson (and Barrera) deserve very serious consideration.
I'm happy for Glen Johnson, he's a guy who has been screwed over a lot is his carrer, but still he has stayed active and has always given it all he has in the ring.
I wouldn't pick Johnson as fighter of the year, but I will say he has had the biggest breakthrough in 2004. Just think, back in January who in their right mind would have thought that Glen Johnson would be considered a fighter of the year candidate?
I must agree. He is not spectacular . . .But he worked hard . . . accomplished what needs to be accomplished . . . from a nobody to a CHAMP . . . the best candidate for fighter of the year. ;)
yeah, that sounds about right to me too. Johnson's probably had the best year of his career, i think he's fighter of the yeear, as much for his hardworking humble attitude as much for his accomplishments, he made boxing look good this year, a classy humble champ
Corrales i think didn`t beat Casaymor on merit, i think it was more or less a draw and Feretas was always overrated. Corrales is not in the same class as say a Tommy hearns or a Ray Leonard. He may win the odd fight against a decent fighter but any man who beats women doesn`t deserve any award even if he had beaten Tsyzu, Hatton and Cotto this year. Bastard should be still behind bars. The only KO that comes to mind when reflecting on this piece of shit is the one he scored over his girlfriend in the fall of 2000. I hope he gets a beating like the one Mayweather gave him, then i hope he retires and goes to prison. Fucking woman beater!
What kind of punch did he KO her with?
The "journey man" Glenn Johnson coming out of nowhere to give Roy Jones a beating, to win against Tarver and to become undisputed lightheavyweight champ of the world is a feat that definitely should get him the fighter of the year tittle.
When they made Toney FIGHTER OF THE YEAR las year (2003), Pacman was his closest rival. But THE RING reported t'was not a close finish. This year may be pretty close between Corrales and Johnson. ;) While Corrales has been bruited about, mainly by boxing media, as a sure thing for months now, Johnson, albeit in a fashion far from spectacular and conclusive, tossed his name right in there with two big wins in the year (though, the second one pretty much pales in comparison with the first). ;)
He has a good case but he could have clinched it if he fought and beat Castillo, thats all.
He could of clinched it but I think Castillo will beat him quite convincingly in my opinion. Alot of the media have pretty much named Corrales fighter of the year so that's why I said he would win it.
I feel that Casamayor actually beat Corrales by a point or two in the rematch, although the same could be said of the Tarver - Johnson fight.
I thought Casamayor won also but like you said the same could be said about this fight with Johnson and Tarver.
How did he miss his chance when he has two big wins this year just like Johnson?

I think he missed out on his chance when the scheduled December clash with Castillo fell apart.

When THE RING made Toney its FIGHTER OF THE YEAR (2003)for the second time, one of only a handful who got that distinction twice (the very short list includes Ray Robinson, Ali and Holyfield), it was because Toney came back from career grave. That's why he was also awarded COMEBACK FIGHTER OF THE YEAR, the first time that both awards went to one recipient.
Johnson came practically from NOWHERE, and that's a worse place to have come from!
I think Nigel and company would seriously consider him. IMHO, he has better than a good shot at FIGHTER OF THE YEAR 2004. :)
