Morales - Barrera III got me thinking, is weight overrated??? When it was announced Morales was up to 143 pounds and Barrera was 132 the commentators immediatly pointed out what a huge advantage this would be for Morales. Watching the fight i would say Barreras punches were just as, if not more powerful than Morales.
Is there a weight advantage? Does more weight make you more powerful? Less make you faster? I dont't think so, what about u guyz?
True, well in my friends case it is, he's a pro and walks around at around 155, but has fought for titles at 130, non title he's usually 137 - 139, he says he gets down to around 142 -144 quite well but after that he starts to struggle, dry out, he says it drains your power and punch resistance drastically cos killing yourself to make the weight takes everything out of you, and he does hit hard in the gym but he has few stoppages, It seems once you go past your 'natural healthy' low weight then it's all bad from then on, and the more weight to drop the worst.
He is in good shape too at around 150 so he's not dropping shit either
I can totally relate to that, when I was 117 I was really hard in the stomach but I had felt really drained and weak...Im back up to around 122 and I am a bit softer in the midsection, but I feel a lot better and hit harder...
I think wieght is greatly overrated, especially when a guy moves up in wieght to take some one on, then looses. Take the Trinidad vs Mayorga fight as example. Tito fucked Mayorga up but people we trying not to give Tito credit for the win because Mayo isnt a natural middleweight. Who gives a fuck? They guys are pretty much the same size and wieighed the same when they fought. People act like they guy couldnt punch anymore just because he didnt KO Tito. fucking rediculous.
Oh so true.
Yes. Yes, he did come in that heavy. He was 143 pounds of small welterweight. Small and sluggish.
(I'm talking about Erik Morales here. Guess I reply instead of quote by accident.)

I too think weight is overrated, unless it's 15-20lbs. difference...I don't think it's that noticeable.
One thing I hate though is when a fighter starts his career at a weight unnatural for him. I hate it when you have a guy who weighs 154 naturally and based on his height is good for the weight, but talks about wanting to get down to 130...There's nothing I hate more than that.
I think that could be true about some fighters. Like I said above Tito's chin was always weak and his legs were not that steady at 147 because he had trouble making weight. Corrales had the same problem at 130 since moving to 135 he seems to have a better chin.
isnt it true the less you wieght, the less chin you have...i mean the more weight the body has, the it more relaxed and feels good..but isnt it true ..that the less and less you wieght...the weaker your chin is because your body for your height is to weak...get me
like for exmaple...i guess what it mean is if..amb fought at 126..but walks around at like 146-150...when he's at his walking around weight (his chin is more solid) any truth to this...one eample is roy draining himself to fight glen and tarver
I thought Barrera was the quicker and the harder puncher in all three fights. I think extra weight can help fighters absorb punches better. Examples would be Tito and Corrales. Since moving up to 160 Tito has shown to take punches better and be more steady on his legs and the same thing can be said about Corrales since his move to 135.
When you are tall it is only to your advantage if you can fight tall....
Dorin was 5'4 spadafora was 6' I believe and I use this as an example because it is a huge difference anyways...Dorin chopped spadafora down to size and made him look 5'2.
Being tall is only good if you can fight tall.
Agreed. Jameel McCline is another glaring example of a fighter who doesn't fight like he's 6'6 270. Big guys are only effective if they utilize their height and reach advantage. I think Kiltschko does a decent job of using his size. McCline should take leaning lessons from Lennox Lewis.
I think height is overrated.
Yes It can be an advantage, but only if youre smart enough to use it.

Barrera looked really bulky not to mention soft, he looked 143 not Morales....
I think a weight difference can play into it a little bit but not much, I mean Morales was a heavier puncher at 118-122 then he is now at 126-130....
