toney can keep yapping about this guy or that guy ducking him,but if he doesnt manage to get a fight with a high rated or ranked highly heavyweight then he wont get any consideration for a title fight.
Toney will beat every fighter out there who chooses to fight him aggresively, its a heavyweight that chooses to throw a jab and move around a lot that will beat him, I think Vitally has a good enough style to do it, plus I hear he is training with Dave Tiberi, can someone confirm this?
He beat some QUALITY oposition quite convincingly..
No, buddy. I want the name of the guy he beat. I know who it is....I want to see if you know.
Give you a hint...he's a Canadian fighter who once fought Roy Jones the same day Roy played a semi-pro basketball game (stupid, punk-ass maneuver by Roy, BTW).
See....I have this theory ....that you don't know anything, but like to see yourself talk.
This would make you this forum's second biggest loudmouth know-nothing....right behind King Of Empty Talk, "Dr. Cynical".
True he does rarely take a good hit but he's in with the big boys now so to speak. These guys hit substantially harder than most cruiserweights but fortunatly for James Toney is that his speed and style may negate alot of power advantages. I get this funny feeling that James Toney is going to get a big shock in the heavyweight division, he needs to pick his opponents very carefully if he's wanting a title shot. The two heavyweights he has fought have not had the power to knock him out but there are plenty of heavyweights who could out there. If only he wouldn't have unfortunatly got an injury when he was scheduled to face Jameel McCline, that fight would have answered all our questions about his ability as a heavyweight. Jameel brings all aspects of heavyweight boxing to the ring.
Jameel would have been a great test for Toney. If Toney needs experience for a guy with the size of Vitali that's the man to fight. I think Toney should be very stingy when considering opponents. He needs to take the shortest, least risky road to Vitali.
"Jameel brings all aspects of heavyweight boxing to the ring."
Except that he lacks the heart of a true fighter.
He panics, thinks too much in there.
I saw him fight, live, against Shannon Briggs...I couldn't believe how tentative & mechanical he was.
True Jabs BUT he is a active heavyweight in his prime trying his hardest to make a name for himself. He has tremendous power and the typical size of an average heavyweight today. He would have given Toney every single test in the book and i'm sure we would have seen a heartfelt performance from him. Jameel may lack motivation against heavyweights but put a big man in the ring with a guy who was a middleweight and i'm sure you see a compeltely different McCline. Pride alone would make him press this fight on and give Toney the typical heavyweight fight. I think it was ideal because if this fight would have happened we would have been sat here now saying
"Wow James Toney is a true heavyweight contender, the way he handled a 250lb 6,6 Jameel McCline was amazing"
Or
""Hmmmm James Toney should stay in the cruiserweight division where he has most potential, the heavyweight division is a step too far."

The thing is...Toney rarely ever gets hit by hard, flush shots. It would take a punch that he didn't see to KO him but the thing is...he has a granite chin. Although we haven't seen him take a big time flush shot from a real heavy, I think he could take it. He throws some nasty, accurate counters too. Prime Holy would have beaten Toney at HW. I would have liked to see them fight at cruiser. It would have been a great fight for awhile until Holy outworked him.

I agree. He counterpunched effectively alright, but he can be hit. What if some aggressive heavyweight shoots from the outside like a Vitali? Lights out! Good night. Prime Evander would've KTFO someone standing in front him like what JT did. So can prime Tua and Tyson, but their vaunted power would just be too much.
So very true, a prime Evander Holyfield would have given James Toney a nasty beating. I'd give James abit of credit against the likes of David Tua as he is a little one dimensional for James but a versatile heavyweight in their prime should be able to beat James Toney.
An aggressive HW is exactly what Toney wants. He is at his best when he can counterpunch and fight a pressure fighter inside (Jirov). He is one of the best counterpunchers in the game and his style/defensive skill keeps him from getting hit flush very often. He'd have the most trouble with someone like Vitali.

How about Tyson?Today's Tyson vs. Toney? Should be a good fight. But both should whip themselves into the best shape they can be at this point in their careers. Both shall by then be coming off injuries...
Tua sounds about right. Any comments on the turn out against him or any other aggresive heavyweight?
As we all know David Tua has the power to take out James Toney but thats about it. Someone like James Toney has the skills to beat the likes of David Tua quite comfortably. Chris Byrd managed to do it and he has a awkward style like Toney. Either way Toney needs to fight someone respectable in a aggressive way to earn respect as a true heavyweight contender in my opinion.
