He went right after RJ and brought the fight to him from start to finish. If only RJ was more offensive minded, this could have been a back and forth war.G.J's punch output amazed me and he kept a steady pace without slowing down the entire 9rds.I think G.J won 7 out of the 9 Rounds which is impressive, because whens the last time you saw RJ lose that many Rds,not even Tarver could win that many. G.J is a crowd pleasing fighter, something that RJ hasn't always been. The fighter with more desire G.J kept moving foward and kept pounding away on RJ like he was nobody. He showed a warrior-like mentality and relentless aggression that convinced me that any fight he's in would be entertaining to watch.Cant wait to see him fight again.
*RJ will still have his job as a HBO commentator.Who knows where Johnson would go if he had lost this fight. The fighter with more to fight for won this fight.

You've bumped a thread from 12 years ago to tell us the above?

I've been a Glen Johnson fan since he and JuGo (R.I.P) went at it. Fan friendly style, the Roadwarrior fought everyone in their hometowns.
Plus after his biggest win he still maintained his humble self saying he is still looking for Mr Best.
I agree that Jones was landing shot that were more effective. The only problem was, he didn't throw enough! I think once he saw that Johnson was swinging wide and had a high punch output, Roy figured Glen would tire himself out. Only he didn't. So by say the 6-7th round. Roy starts to panick as in "Oh shit this guy's gonna keep the same pace and I'll lose on the cards" I think Roy wanted an all out assault in the final 2-3 rounds to take Johnson out. He's smart, he knew he was losing. Only he never had a chance cuz he got clocked before his offensive attack.
I'm not a huge RJJ fan but I do respect the man's accomplishments and was in my opinion p4p king (looking at his overall accomplishments more than his last outings). To see the "king" go down like that was just shocking. I was silenced for a good 5-10 minutes with my mouth open.I was sad, then worried that he might have been seriously hurt.
Okay, that works for me, or it will have to. My girl just came in from church with a fever so you boy's will have to debate this without me...gotta take care of my baby.
I don't think punch numbers necessarily mean one guys is getting outboxed, although that can be the case. I think RJ was getting out-hussled more than outboxed. IMO, outboxing is when one guy is making the other guy miss AND landing more and a better percentage of punches.
RJ was landing with the same percentage of punches as Johnson (actually, 1% better I think...27% to 26% or 28% to 27%), but Johnson threw a lot more punches. At least I think these were the overall stats. RJ averaged about 20 punches per round, which is pathetic, so it wasn't hard for Johnson to out-work RJ. RJ was like a statue in the ring most of the fight and I was a little surprised that Johnson was only able to land 27%.
Wright vs Mosley and Forrest vs Mosley are two good examples of a guy being out-boxed.
How happy were you when you saw Jones on the floor?
Ah man, now youre trying to "call the dog's" on me!! :D Let's just say I was smiling....will that do? And then I started to feel sorry for him (wtf??)
Have you ever seen replays of Ali-Foreman tracylee? That's what this fight reminded me of, except Johnson was landing more. Foreman was certainly winning rounds against Ali, but I would not say he was "outboxing" Ali.I felt certain Johnson could not keep up the pace through 12. Jones was leaning back on the ropes and sliping punches will delivering powerful body shots. Jones wasn't as busy but his puches were more measured and most of them landed cleanly.
based on the pace of this fight it was destined to end in 1 of 2 ways. Either Johnson was going to land a big clean shot and put Roy down, or he was going to tire and get ko'ed himself.
Okay, I've seen the Ali-Foreman replay. But, even though I dont put alot of validity in compubox numbers, Johnson was outpunching him in every round but 2 or 3. Even though it's done by human's that make mistakes, the difference was big enough that even deducting some of the number's for Johnson you still have him outboxing Jones. Johnson applied pressure and didnt stop; Jones threw only a few combo's, but for the most part when he did punch it was ONE punch.
I know all of you think that because I dont like Jones I cant score a fight without bias, but I'm telling you as a neutral observer, Johnson outboxed him. And if it had been reversed, everyone would be saying that Jones "schooled" Johnson. I've kept any and all smart remark's about Jones' loss out of my posts out of kindness; but I stand by what I say...Johnson out punched him all night long

I don't know that I would say he totally outboxed Jones. And I do think Stewart made a good point. It looked like Johnson was totally shooting his load early on, and would pay the price for it. He struck me more as a desperate fighter than a smart one.
I think he was trying to get in Jones' head (you know, what Jones is famous for) and I think it worked :p
Didnt outbox him? sonny, Jones won one (maybe two) rounds; what would you call it?

I've seen Glencoffee Johnson fight 7 times and he usually end's up getting screwed on the cards, so last night was a nice change for him . I had it 79-73 at the end of the 8th (giving Jones the 3rd round; not being biased, thats just what I saw).
I got a little ticked with Manny Steward for saying that Glen was being "amateurish and immature" for attacking Jones like that in the first round; I kept thinking "its all about the mental game Manny, and damned if he didnt win that round on MY card doing it :D ) and naturally the completely OBJECTIVE HBO crew were like "well, he MAY have won that first round"...excuse me, but what the hell? He MAY have? If you didnt give that round to him, then you'd better give it to the ref. cause Jones sure didnt win it.
I feel a little sorry for Jones, but I'm very, very happy for Glenn...after so many bad decision's, it's about time!!!
Oh Spinks, I liked that quote too; he earned my complete respect for saying that (not to mention totally outboxing Jones :p )
I had it exactly the same way 79-73, I don't know what those other dildo judges were watching to call it 77-75.
Johnson deserves credit. He was fighting at a dizzying pace and I had no doubt that the fight was not going the distance. I really thought Johnson would punch himself out, tire, and get KTFO in the later rounds. Well obviously it didn't turn out that way. So props to Johnson. He left an impression on me as well.
