toney is a boxer, he is probably the best boxer in the division.and hits harder then chris bryd.. hes like a diesel miget ali in many ways..ali neva had power .. so i guess we just got to wait and see
He ain't even the best boxer in the division. Eddie Chambers would outbox Toney all day long...ALL DAY LONG..and Eddie would get the shit kicked out of him by either K brother.
This is an old thread but I will reply to it anyway cause I am a Toney fan. At HW he was the most skilled boxer. he posses great D and a granite chin. As for power well he fought Sam peter who has been put down a few times by other fighters but Toney was not really able to hurt him in either of their fights. To admit Peter was put down by much bigger guys than even he McCline and TKo by Vitali but it is what it is Toney could not hurt him nor could he really out box him. Stamina was the issues and Peter had or has decent punching power so Toney had to respect that.
As for sharp accurate punches and the ability to hurt his oppenents Toney did or does posses that ability. It is always the punches you do not see that hurt or stun you. Toney is great at rolling his left shoulder and coming back with a pin point right hand. he hides that punch like a pitcher hides the baseball from a batter. The less time you have to react the more likely it is to land and land cleanly. He is an expert at that. he like Hopkins are masters of not getting hit often and not getting hit cleanly. Same for FMJ although Toney losses that ability to a certain extent since he comes in most fights to heavy for my liking he still has the ability to slip punches and use his shoulders arms and gloves to absorb most of the punishment being dished out by his opponents.
All in all Toney would be served best at fighting at LHW - CW range fighting big HW and in this day and age huge HW's is not going to be very productive for him especially at his age and in the condition he has been coming into fights. He could probably still out box a few of these guys Arreola like fighters....Lefty

timing, accuracy and clean punching are all just as important when trying to hurt an opponent as power and strength.
what he lacks physically he makes up for with his skills. toney has enough pop and enough skill that no HW (except for maybe vitali klit) will be able to walk straight through his punches.

I agree Booker proved he is tough. I think if he does KO his opponents at heavyweight it would be from an a rounds of punishment never from one punch. That is the way he KO'd Holyfield. He was too fast and used great defense in that fight. I think that his defense will help him more than anything against the bigger guys.
I said earlier that Toney has enough power to hurt his opponents but I don't think he will hurt the bigger heavyweights with good chins. Do you think Toney will hurt Vitaly? You're right nobody KO'd Booker. If they did he wouldn't have been undefeated. Look at Booker's record those guys were not going to knock him out. His 22-0 record was deceiving. You know the reason why Toney took this fight whether you admit it or not. There was absolutely no danger. Yeah he was coming off an injury but they tried to pass off Booker as some good young fighter when in reality he is not. I'm not going to knock Toney for not stopping Booker but it is true he doesn't have good enough power to hurt the bigger heavyweights. They said he hurt his left arm and I believe them because they were holding an icepack on it between rounds.
I dont know if Toney will KO bigger guys with great chins becuase he hasnt fought one yet. If he does KO a bigger guy It hink its from rounds of punishment and they guy cant take it anymore. I agree that I dont see too many 1 punch KO's from Toney at heavy.
I agree that Toney knew he could beat Booker and thats why he took the fight. I disagree that Booker is a complete bum and he proved that he wasnt last night. What I do have a problem with is the people who are so sure James has no power and they use this fight against Booker as an example. That is rediculous and you being a reasonable person probably agree with me. You cant use a guy who hasnt been KOed as your example of why Toney's weak because he didnt KO his opponent. Yes Toney beat an old Holyfield, but his chin wasnt old. He could still take a punch when toney fought him. To the best of my knowledge, only 1 other perspn has been able to KO Evander.
Just like I said in another thread. You people who say Toney has no power at heavy are way off base. He did KO Evander, we know that. I think you people are making that assumption after watching Toney fight Booker and not KOing him right? Well idiots, who else has KOed Booker? He has never lost a fight, therefore never KOed! Do you guys understand that? Look at Vitali, Byrd or Ruiz' record and find a guy they didnt KO. If someone else was able to KO that guy, then they must be weak and have no power too. Thats your ridiculous argument. Toney didnt KO Booker so he must be weak. LOL!

Take into mind Holyfield's age and diminished abilities.
Also I don't think Toney will be able to go the full 12 with any of today's heavyweights.
He can try to outbox them but won't get far.
He will be put down.
If a fighter has a rock solid granite chin in the beginning, they will carry that until the end....People say power is the last thing to go no it is your ability to take a punch...

he put Holyfield down, something alot of HW could not do, even the champ Bryd. he can always just outbox the HW's
It seemed like Holyfield went down more on a slip.

Toney still punches like a middle weight, he will never be a major HW player.....
