Pacquiao Fight in Doubt, Algieri Wants More Money

The Long Island boxer Chris Algieri is officially on the clock. For the past week, Huntington’s Algieri has methodically reflected over a seven-figure offer to face Manny Pacquiao in November. But if the highly educated Algieri spends another 24 hours pondering over the bout, he may find that the opportunity of a lifetime was just that: a chance that never reached its fitful conclusion. According to his promoter, Joe DeGuardia, Algieri may lose the fight offer from Top Rank's Bob Arum if he doesn’t respond by Monday.

According to an article by James Howlett that was published on BoxingScene.com this morning, WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri is reportedly less than thrilled with the $1.5 million dollar (plus a percentage of pay-per-view sales) purse being offered to face Manny Pacquiao in November. Rudy Vargas, adviser to top junior welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme of Puerto Rico, said that his fighter would be more than happy to step in and face the Filipino icon for the same purse offered to Algieri.

Whether Chris Algieri actually would be a legitimate threat to Manny Pacquiao is a source of great debate among everyone from message-board sparring partners to professional matchmakers. Promoter Bob Arum is sure, however, that if his company, Top Rank Inc., secures Algieri as Pacquiao’s opponent for a Nov. 22 fight in Macau, China, that Algieri will be a compelling ‘B’ side of their HBO Pay-Per-View main event. “He’s definitely an option because there’s a great storyline,” Arum told BoxingScene.com. “You know, a college kid who has a masters degree [from New York Institute of Technology], a superb boxer, speaks well. He has all the elements to make an interesting match for Manny Pacquiao both inside and outside the ring. So sure, we’re considering it.”

Chris Algieri has gone from a club fighter, cutting his teeth in his hometown of Huntington, LI against nondescript opponents, to someone who could be the breakout star of 2014 if things fall into place. As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Bob Arum of Top Rank has made a formal offer to Algieri to face Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 22 in Macao, China, giving Algieri a chance to carry on the remarkable string of good fortune for the Huntington native. Arum and Algieri’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia said they could potentially reach an agreement on terms of the deal, perhaps as soon as Wednesday or Thursday.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum will meet with Chris Algieri's co-promoter, Art Pelullo of Banner Promotions, on Thursday in Los Angeles, in hopes of nailing down the details of a Nov. 22 fight between Algieri and Manny Pacquiao. Such a matchup wasn't on anyone's GPS until Algieri upset Ruslan Provodnikov, despite the fact that his eye resembled the coin slot in a vending machine. The fight most likely will be in Macau, Arum said Tuesday.

According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, a formal offer has been made to WBO 140-pound champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs) to face Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38KOs), the WBO beltholder at welterweight, on November 22nd in Macau, China. Arum and Algieri's promoter, Joe DeGuardia told the New York Daily News that an agreement could be reached in the coming days. "I hope we'll be able to get Joe on the phone and we'll be able to button this up," Arum said in a phone interview. "We're talking serious now with the idea of making the fight. It's not bullsh*t. Now, whether it gets made or not I don't know."

The upcoming doubleheader on August 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, appears to be an interim-showcase for a planned junior welterweight unification bout between WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16KOs) and IBF champion Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16KOs). Peterson will be facing Edgar Santana in the co-feature, and Garcia appears in the main event against Rod Salka. Showtime will televise both fights.

Just over a week ago Ruslan Provodnikov stunning lost his WBO junior welterweight title by split decision against unheralded Chris Algieri. Provodnikov dropped to 23-3 with 16 stoppages at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY. Although Max De Luca voted 117-109 in favor of the “Siberian Rocky” he was outvoted by Don Trella and Max Shreck who had Algieri winning 114-112 twice.

WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs), who earlier this month pulled off a big upset victory over Ruslan Provodnikov at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, is open to fighting the best fighters in his division. The recognized ruler at 140 is WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia, who returns on August 9th at Barclays. There is also IBF champion Lamont Peterson. And IBO/WBA 'regular' champion Jessie Vargas who defends his title against Anton Novikov on August 2nd.
