The upcoming doubleheader on August 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, appears to be an interim-showcase for a planned junior welterweight unification bout between WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16KOs) and IBF champion Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16KOs).
Peterson will be facing Edgar Santana in the co-feature, and Garcia appears in the main event against Rod Salka. Showtime will televise both fights.
But Danny's father and trainer, Angel Garcia, has a better idea. He feels that Peterson, should he win, trade punches with newly crowned WBO champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs) - and then the winner would face Danny with all four titles at stake - which sets things up for Danny's attempt to become the first Puerto Rican boxer to hold all four major sanctioning belts at once.
"They fight each other and the winner out of that, they sanction those belts and then [Danny] becomes the first Puerto Rican to win all four belts in the division. That would be better. They fight each other and the winner fights us," Angel told BoxingScene.com.
"It would nice if they fought each other, sanction the WBO and IBF, and then [the winner fights us] for all four belts. The whole enchilada. Let them fight each other."
