Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) will be looking to do a lot of damage on WBC, IBO, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) - when the two fighters collide in their highly anticipated rematch.
Canelo and Golovkin are scheduled to meet each other for a second time on September 15th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Their first contest took place in the same venue in September of 2017, and it ended with a controversial twelve round split draw.
They were originally scheduled to fight in a rematch on May 5th - but the contest was canceled after Canelo tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol and was then suspended for six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Canelo has long claimed that his positive tests were directly connected to the ingestion of contaminated meat.
But Golovkin rejected his rival's explanation - and then accused Canelo of being a long-time user of performance enhancing drugs.
Canelo has spoken to Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez - and the furious fighter has advised his promoter that he intends to teach Golovkin a severe lesson for the statements that GGG has been making since the first fight.
“It’s the most important thing for him,” Gomez said to Press Enterprise.
“He feels that he has to prove something to Gennady because Gennady disrespected him and came up with all the excuses, whining after the first fight, that he really wants to go and teach him a lesson.”
And Canelo is not worried about his popularity losing ground in Mexico - due to the drug testing controversy.
“None at all, none at all,” Gomez said. “He got a tremendous amount of support from the Mexican fans, especially the Mexican people in Mexico, because they know what happened. They know that there’s a history with that (tainted meat), they know that there have been other athletes affected by tainted meat.”
