Demetrius Andrade is seemingly ready to go from the kiddie side of the pool to the part where sharks roam free.

According to Mike Coppinger of ESPN, the former two-division champ is on the verge of finalizing a deal that will see him face off against current WBC interim tag holder, David Benavidez.

The 35-year-old has always grabbed the nearest microphone he can find and openly challenged the best in or around his division to step up to the plate and fight him. Call-outs to Jaime Munguia, Gennadiy Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez, and Jermall Charlo - amongst others, have led him nowhere.

So, with nothing but bottom feeders plastered on his resume, Andrade (32-0, 19 KOs) believed that moving to the super middleweight division would lead to the sort of career-defining fights he’s been craving. A lopsided victory against Demond Nicholson allowed him to get his feet wet, but a matchup against Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) could take his career from purgatory to the top of the mountain.

For the 26-year-old, he enjoyed placing a beating on Caleb Plant in his latest ring appearance just a few months ago. Now, he plans on doing the same to the undefeated former Olympian.

Alvarez finds a matchup between two men that have consistently called him out intriguing. Of course, the 33-year-old has his own business to attend to. On September 30th, he’ll place all four of his super middleweight titles on the line against Jermell Charlo.

The last thing Alvarez wants to do is look past the somewhat smaller Charlo but he can’t help but fantasize about how Benavidez vs. Andrade will play out. When recently asked to stick to his guns and make a decision, Alvarez thought long and hard before shrugging his shoulders and giving his answer.

“That’s a really good fight,” Alvarez told BoxingScene.com. “50/50.”
