According to Mexican superstar Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, he views the WBO light heavyweight title as the most important of his career.
Canelo will move up by two weight divisions to challenge Sergey Kovalev for his title at the full division limit, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"It represents a lot, something historical in my career. The most important title in my career,” said Canelo to ESPN Deportes.
The main factor behind the Canelo's decision to choose Kovalev as his next opponent, is to look for his fourth world title in a fourth weight division - something that only three Mexican boxers have achieved: Érik Morales, Juan Manuel Márquez and Jorge “Travieso” Arce.
To fulfill his mission, Canelo explained the details about his preparation, which he said have to be done with a lot of focus.
"More than anything, I have to train well, at 100 percent, and have sparring sessions with boxers of the same weight, style and height (as Kovalev) and get strong for the fight, as always, adapting to the weight and strength," said Canelo on the challenge of fighting at 175 pounds.
Although he will do his best to adapt to the Russian puncher's style, Canelo acknowledged that he's arrive at the commitment on November 2 with a physical disadvantage.
"Logically, it is an advantage for him (Kovalev), the physical aspect, but my skills and speed will come to the surface," Canelo said.
A victory would make Canelo the only boxer in the sport to hold titles in three different weight classes. He has WBC, WBA world titles at the middleweight limit of 160-pounds. And he still holds the WBA's "regular" title at the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds, which he captured in December 2018 when he demolished Rocky Fielding in three rounds.
