Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez was very impressed with the huge victory by his countryman, Andy Ruiz.

Back on June 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Ruiz dropped heavy favorite Anthony Joshua four times to secure a seventh round stoppage.

Ruiz became the first Mexican heavyweight champion in boxing's long history, as he walked away with the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO world titles.

The victory has catapulted Ruiz's popularity with the Mexican fight fans and instantly made him a major force in the weight class.

"It was spectacular. He won in force. He was the best and deserves all of the credibility. And so, there are many examples of national boxers [from Mexico doing well]," Canelo said to GQ Mexico.

"We have a high standing [in the sport] and there are a lot of of fighters who have also come down. There have been great moments, but this is one of the best."

Ruiz will now face Joshua in a high stakes rematch on December 7th in Saudi Arabia.

Canelo is on his way to potentially facing WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev on November 2nd. Canelo, who holds the WBC, WBA middleweight titles, would move up by two weight divisions to take the fight.

During a large portion of his career, Canelo received a lot of heat from a certain sector of the Mexican fans. He doesn't understand why certain factions of the Mexican fans go after their top athletes - especially on social media.

"Actually, I don't understand why a lot of Mexicans choose hatred and bullying to get close to the athletes who represent them. In the end, they should be proud that there are people who carry their colors around the world, but it's not like that," Canelo stated.
