Billy Joe Saunders: record, next fight and profile →
There was little about the May 8 three-belt super middleweight unification bout that surprised Caleb Plant, right down to the party with whom he would enter negotiations for his own next fight.
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has advised his close friend, Billy Joe Saunders, to resume his career once his injuries fully healed. Last month at AT&T Stadium in Texas, Saunders suffered his first career defeat when he was stopped in eight rounds during his IBF, WBA, WBC super middleweight unification clash with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Former two division world champion Billy Joe Saunders is not ruling out the possibility of retirement - in the aftermath of last month's stoppage loss at the hands of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Before a crowd of over 70,000 at AT&T Stadium in Texas, Saunders was stopped after eight rounds - when his corner waved off the fight before the start of the ninth.
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez amassed more ticket sales for his most recent main event than for any other since his two-fight set with Gennadiy Golovkin. The four-division and reigning super middleweight champ from Guadalajara, Mexico added to his legacy with an 8th round stoppage of previously unbeaten WBO titlist Billy Joe Saunders. The three-belt unification clash headlined a May 8 DAZN-streamed event from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas which generated a live gate of $9,002,920 from a record 66,065 tickets sold.
WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade sounded off on Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Two weeks ago at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Andrade was ringside to watch Canelo stop Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounds to unify the WBC, WBO, WBA super middleweight titles.
There appears to be some sort of rift between trainers Ben Davison and Mark Tibbs - with respect to Billy Joe Saunders' stoppage loss at the hands of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Two weeks ago, Saunders was stopped in eight rounds in a three belt super middleweight unification.
Josh Taylor was impressed by Billy Joe Saunders’ performance in his career-defining fight against Canelo Alvarez. The unbeaten IBF/WBA 140-pound champion had their super middleweight title unification fight even through eight rounds. Though that high-profile fight ended in disappointment for Saunders on May 8, Taylor thinks the British southpaw proved himself at boxing’s elite level versus the fighter most commonly considered number one, pound-for-pound, in the sport.
Mark Tibbs, head trainer of former two-division world champion Billy Joe Saunders, believes that it's going to be 'very tough' for his boxer to come back from last Saturday's loss to Canelo Alvarez.
Nothing Caleb Plant witnessed Saturday night makes him feel any less confident about beating Canelo Alvarez. Plant gave Alvarez credit for stopping Billy Joe Saunders, but the unbeaten IBF super middleweight champion noticed flaws in the Mexican superstar. Plant discussed Alvarez’s performance versus Saunders during the most recent episode of “The PBC Podcast,” which debuted Thursday on www.premierboxingchampions.com.
Trainer Ben Davison, who was part of last Saturday's corner team for Billy Joe Saunders, says the former two-division world champion was looking to come out for the ninth round in his super middleweight unification clash with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
