Billy Joe Saunders: record, next fight and profile →
After a whirlwind few days where young heavyweight superstar Daniel Dubois has been unexpectedly thrust back into the media spotlight, ‘Dynamite’ has now said it is “time to move on".
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who works on a fight by fight basis with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, could see the Mexican superstar take bigger risks in the future with physically superior fighters.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman was ringside last Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, and watched Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez stop Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounds to unify the WBC, WBA, WBO super middleweight titles.
Eddie Hearn, promoter for former two-division champion Billy Joe Saunders, expects to see his boxer return to the ring in the future. Saunders suffered his first defeat last Saturday night, when he was stopped in eight rounds by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in a WBA, WBO, WBC super middleweight unification at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Super middleweight Zach Parker insists he will be more than up for the task of toppling Canelo when his shot comes around and says the Mexican superstar will never have been in with a 'tank' like him.
EVENTS IN THE early hours of Sunday morning demonstrated once again that size does matter in the sport of boxing. The richly skilled ring craft of Billy Joe Saunders was just not enough to knock the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez bandwagon off course. Put simply, he is just too big and too strong at the weight, along with the many others he has campaigned at across his 59-fight career. And he can fight a bit too, I should add.
ARLINGTON, Texas – Demetrius Andrade expected more from Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday night. Andrade anticipated seeing the sharpest Saunders imaginable in the ring against Canelo Alvarez. Instead, Andrade watched what he considered an ordinary Saunders attempt to fend off the hard-hitting opponent commonly considered the best boxer, pound-for-pound, in the sport.
After a disappointing night for Billy Joe Saunders, his management team, MTK Global put a positive gloss on things. “He went into the lion’s den and dared to be great in front of 70,000 fans,” said a post on Twitter. “You’re still one of the best fighters in the world. You will be back.”
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Here’s a news flash, folks… I love sports. I played football, baseball and hockey to moderate success as a youngster, picked up distance running as an intermittent hobby in my 30s and have been fortunate enough to scratch out something resembling a post-college living watching and writing about athletes in action.
Billy Joe Saunders has offered his first comment since the lone defeat of his career. The former two-division titlist was not in a position to provide a post-fight interview due to the severity of the injury he suffered in an 8th round stoppage loss to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez this past Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Saunders literally leaned into a brutal uppercut which fractured his right orbital bone in three places, with his condition leaving head trainer Mark Tibbs no choice but to stop the fight.
