Miguel Berchelt and Miguel "Mickey" Roman promised to deliver a Fight of the Year contender. The all-Mexican showdown delivered. Berchelt defended his WBC super featherweight title for the fourth time, scoring a ninth-round TKO against Roman in front of 5,420 fans at the Don Haskins Center on Saturday evening.

By Keith Idec - Miguel Berchelt beat up Miguel “Mickey” Roman for as long as referee Jon Schorle would allow it Saturday night. Schorle finally stopped their 12-round, 130-pound title fight with two seconds remaining in the ninth round. By then, Mexico’s Berchelt had knocked down Roman three times, twice in the...

Expect fireworks: Both landed/threw well above the jr. light. average for total punches. Miguel Berchelt landed 48.3% of his power punches, Miguel Roman 40.5%. They can be hit too, as Berchelt opponents landed 37.3% of their power punches, while Roman opponents landed 38.2% of their power shots. Roman will have to get past Berchelt's jab (6.8 landed per round) to be effective, as 25.4 of Roman's 27.8 landed punches (91%) are power shots.

Miguel Berchelt has heard and read all he can stand from fellow Mexican Miguel Roman. Berchelt admits that his challenger has gotten under his skin by talking trash throughout the buildup toward their 12-round, 130-pound title bout Saturday night in El Paso, Texas. The defending WBC world super featherweight champion plans to take out his anger on Roman when they square off at UTEP’s Don Haskins Center in a fight ESPN+ will stream live as the main event of an eight-bout card.

After an unexpected loss about four and a half years ago, Miguel Berchelt has ascended to become one of, if not, the best fighters at 130 pounds. Berchelt brims confidence, but he maintains a balance of humility and hunger to push forward in his pro career. Berchelt will need that and much more when he defends his WBC world title belt tonight against Miguel ‘Mickey’ Roman at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas.

Saul “Neno” Rodriguez (21-0-1) will snap a 21-month layoff when he returns to the ring Saturday night in El Paso, Texas. Across the ring from him will be Claudio Rosendo Tapia (28-18-4) of Argentina.

When you’re approaching 87 years old and have promoted thousands of boxing matches, it’s difficult to get too excited about many fights. Bob Arum’s company doesn’t promote Miguel Berchelt or Miguel Roman, but their super featherweight title fight Saturday night is one of the exceptions. Arum and Top Rank president Todd duBoef jumped at the chance to buy the rights to stream Berchelt-Roman through ESPN+ because they believe these Mexican rivals will produce an all-action brawl when they square off at UTEP’s Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
