Former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew has thrown some fresh shade in the direction of WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs).
In March 2017, Bellew dropped the WBC title and made the leap to heavyweight.
Since then, he's banked back to back stoppage wins over former two division champion David Haye.
Wilder is currently in negotiations for a potential fight against former unified king Tyson Fury, which may come down in the fall. Fury would have to win his upcoming fight against Francesco Pianetta on August 18th in Belfast, Ireland.
Bellew is not impressed with Wilder's record or his name value.
He believes Wilder should be a much bigger name and blames the boxer's team for a lack or recognition.
“Technically, he’s a windmill artist. But ultimately, he has the equaliser – he has the power. That is why people tune in to watch him. He’s the most unknown heavyweight of all time. It’s unbelievable considering the run that he’s had – I think he’s close to nearly 40 or 50 fights. It’s absolutely ridiculous," Bellew said to Talk Sport.
“I mean, I have a better CV than him and I’m not even a heavyweight. You know, I’ve got two wins over a former unified cruiserweight champion of the world and a former heavyweight champion of the world, in David Haye.
“My victories over Haye are better than anyone he’s beaten. That’s a fact, that’s not even up for debate. David Haye’s CV is better than anyone. Let’s put this into context. You’ve got a WBC American heavyweight champion and no one knows who he is. The promotional and managerial job done with Deontay Wilder is really a crime. He should be a global name. He’s a man who knocks guys out and it’s just sad that people walking down the likes of New York City don’t know who he is.”
