To my mind, I reckon Bradley Skeete was perhaps being a little too humble in the wake of his comprehensive British title defence against the talented John Thain on Friday at the Brentwood Centre.
Billy Joe Saunders has been assigned with a mission he simply must accomplish in Glasgow this weekend. The WBO middleweight champion finally gets to make a first defence of the title he won nearly a year ago against Andy Lee. This time he faces Brooklyn based Russian Artur Akavov and, should he do what we expect and retain his belt, it is our intention to make up for lost time in 2017.
First of all, I would like to say that my thoughts are with Nick Blackwell and I sincerely wish him a full and speedy recovery after he underwent surgery last week following a brain injury. Naturally, everyone is baffled over why he was back in the ring sparring after the terrible trauma he experienced back in March following his gruelling encounter with Chris Eubank jnr at Wembley.
Looking back to last weekend, I have to say I was a little dismayed by the widespread horror expressed in some quarters when Andre Ward was given the decision over Sergey Kovalev.
BoxNation is delivering what it says on the tin on Friday evening – putting on a fight night that will appeal to genuine fans of the sport. Of course, the Channel of Champions consistently brings the biggest names in boxing to the living rooms of our subscribers – such as Vasyl Lomachenko on Saturday night – but we also pride ourselves in providing full coverage of the game.
With a bumper year of boxing ahead, the stakes are very high for a number of our fighters set to be showcased on the ‘A Little Less Conversation‘ card at the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on November 26. In particular, perhaps, for our two world champions putting their belts on the line in the Welsh capital.
Very much like the old eighties hit, I too feel like I’m walking on sunshine at the moment and it wouldn’t be over-egging the pudding to say the sun is shining on the great sport of boxing.
FRANK WARREN believes he now has the pulling power again to lure Britain’s top boxers to join him. Warren yesterday declared war on rival promoter Eddie Hearn after agreeing a new tv deal to broadcast BoxNation fights on BT Sport.
The Brentwood Centre on November 25 will play host to the latest stop on the journey of one of British boxing’s brightest talents. I am really excited about our light-heavyweight prospect Anthony Yarde. Here is a young man who will light up division once he has learned the ropes – and he is making pretty light work of what has been put in front of him so far.
Nigh on 18 years after winning his first world title, Manny Pacquiao was at it again at the Thomas and Mack Center on Saturday night. No spring chicken at 37, but the Senator certainly still possesses a spring in his step and had enough left in the tank to comfortably negotiate the threat of Jessie Vargas, who is no slouch.
