Undefeated, rising welterweight Yuriy Nuzhnenko (27-0, 13KOs) of Ukraine is calling for a showdown with WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25KOs). Nuzhnenko became the WBA's interim-welterweight champ earlier this month in France, when he won a unanimous decision over hometown hero Frederic Klose.
"My goal right now is to eliminate the prefix of "interim" from my championship title. Miguel Cotto is invited to help," Nuzhnenko told Primerahora.
Nuzhnenko's "interim" status may force may force the WBA to step in to make a ruling. Cotto has other plans, like working toward another mega-fight. Bob Arum recently told the paper that he would like Cotto to return on March 8, possibly in Puerto Rico. Coincidently, March 8 is the same date HBO has reserved for a possible Juan Diaz-Michael Katsidis lightweight title clash. Doubleheader anyone?
