BoxingScene.com was advised by multiple sources that WBA "Super" featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0) may possibly lose his title. The situation is somewhat confusing but hopefully the following time line will somewhat clear up the matter.
Gamboa won the then WBA interm title in April of 2009 when he defeated Jose Rojas. Gamboa was elevated to a regular champion shortly thereafter. This past September the Cuban dynamo added the IBF belt to his collection when he defeated Orlando Salido in Las Vegas and was also elevated to "Super" champion by the WBA for unifying the WBA and IBF titles.
Jonathan Barros then picked up Gamboa's vacated WBA "regular" strap when he defeated Irving Berry this past December.
This past March Gamboa successfully defended his WBA title by thoroughly dominating Jorge Solis but was stripped of the IBF title when he skipped their mandatory reweigh in on the morning of the fight.
According to my sources Gamboa will be stripped of his "super champion" versions of the WBA title because he's no longer a unified champion. Chris John is also a WBA "super champion" at featherweight, who received the higher title after remaining champion for several years. And Jonathan Barros, who faces Celestino Cabllero on June 18th - remains as the WBA's regular champion at featherweight.
