It's tough to get noticed in a boxing beehive like New York City, but you can't fault Jorge Teron. Teron sports an exciting, all-action style that has made him into a fan favorite in New York, where he resides in the Bronx.
After 17 fights, Teron sports a 16-0-1 record, with his only draw coming against the highly experienced Armando Cordoba last June. Less than a month later, Teron settled the score with a six-round decision victory, picking up a wealth of experience in turning the tables.
With trainer Mark Breland behind him, Teron goes into battle June 27 against the dangerous TBA in New York City. That fight will be on ESPN2's Wednesday Night Fights. I recently spoke with "The Truth" about his upcoming bout.
BoxingScene.com: What's the word, Jorge Teron?
Jorge Teron: "I'm doing great. I'm finishing up training for my next fight June 27 and looking forward to getting back in the ring."
BoxingScene.com: Your fight is less than a week away, tell us a little bit about it. Do you have an opponent yet?
Teron: "I still don't know who I'm fighting so I don't have any info on anyone yet. I'm in great shape and I've trained really hard for this fight so I'll be ready for whoever they put in front of me."
BoxingScene.com: How was your training camp? Who have you sparred with to prepare for the fight?
Teron: "Training for this fight has been great. I've sparred with several up-and-coming fighters that really helped me get ready including Luis, a Mexican welterweight who just won his second fight this past Wednesday.
BoxingScene.com: You fought last month against Jovan Jones, stopping him in five rounds. Talk about that performance, how do you feel you did?
Teron: "I think I did good in that fight. I could have started a little faster, but I was happy with the way I outboxed Jones and then took him out when I had him hurt.
BoxingScene.com: How is working with Mark Breland going? What does he bring to the table for you?
Teron: "Working with Mark has been great. We have a lot of physical similarities so he knows exactly what I go through in the ring. He brings the experience of being a former world champion and an Olympic gold medalist to the table which is a huge plus."
BoxingScene.com: How did you initially get involved in boxing?
Teron: "I started boxing at 14 just to stay busy. It was my Dad's idea. After a couple weeks in the gym I fell in love with the sport and decided that boxing was going to be it for me."
BoxingScene.com: Who are the fighters that you look up to?
Teron: "My favorite all-time fighters are Muhammad Ali, Ray Leonard and Ray Robinson. Those guys made it look so easy."
BoxingScene.com: How did you get your nickname, "The Truth"?
Teron: "My manager Steven Heid came up with the nickname. I loved it so that's what we went with."
BoxingScene.com: What are your some of your impressions that you take from winning the NY Golden Gloves three times?
Teron: "Winning the Golden Gloves was a great thing for me and has definitely helped me as a pro. It got me used to fighting in front of big crowds."
BoxingScene.com: You're a big lightweight, at 6'0 how long can you continue to make 135 pounds? Do you have any difficulty making the weight?
Teron: "I don't have any difficulty making 135 and I plan on staying in this weight class as long as I can comfortably make the weight. I'm sure that a couple years from now I might have to move up but I want my first world championship to be at 135 pounds."
BoxingScene.com: What did you think of Edgar Santana's shocking loss to Harrison Cuello this past week?
Teron: "Edgar is a good friend of mine and I think it's unfortunate what happened to him. I didn't see the fight but I heard it was just a good punch that Edgar didn't see and wasn't able to recover from. I know Edgar though and I know he'll come back from that fight and be just fine."
BoxingScene.com: What are your thoughts on the state of New York boxing, with Curtis Stevens, Gary Stark, and Santana losing all in the last few weeks?
Teron: "I still think the state of New York boxing is great. Yes, 3 prospects have lost in the past couple of weeks but I know all three guys personally and I believe they all have what it takes to come back from their losses."
BoxingScene.com: Final thoughts, what would you like to say to the fans?
Teron: "I want to thank all the fans for their support and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the fights on Wednesday where I'll put on a great performance for everyone to enjoy. Thanks again!"
