At the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, WBO interim-junior middleweight champion Paul Williams (37-1, 27KOs) won a dominating twelve round decision over Winky Wright (51-5, 25KOs) in a middleweight bout. The scores were 119-109, 119-109 and 120-108.
The fight started at a very fast pace. Wright looked to be in great shape after a near two year layoff, throwing a lot and pressing Williams, who was throwing a heavy amount of punches himself. Wright and Williams traded some very good counter right hands. During the second, Williams landed off a ten punch combination that pushed Wright back. A welt began to build under Winky's right eye. Williams put a lot of pressure on Wright by throwing ten punches to every one punch for Wright. The third saw more of Williams using a much higher volume of punching to outwork Wright.
Williams continued to outwork Wright in the fourth by throwing triple jabs, double right hooks and body shots. Wright was able to come back in the fifth and made it close when Williams slowed down a bit. They traded some big shots in the first minute of the sixth. Williams fought him on the inside and began to wear down his body.
The crowd tried to lift Wright with a chant of "Winky" in the seventh. Wright's face began to look very puffy from all of the jabs and right hands that were landing through his guard. The crowd tried to lift Wright again in the eight with a chant of "let's go Winky." Williams answered the crowd by buzzing Wright with a hard right hand. Wright took a bit of a beating during the eight as Williams worked him over with punches to the head and body.
The ninth round was another wipeout in favor of Williams. He was beating Wright up and down the ring with big punches. Williams ran out in the tenth, throwing multiple combinations to batter Wright and had him covering up for his life.
In the eleventh, Williams stood at a distance and landed potshots on Wright. The two of them came out slugging in the first minute of the twelfth and final round. Both landed good punches. Williams' high volume of punching quickly took over. Williams pounded on Wright from several angles to close the show.
