For the first time in history, the three major sanctioning organizations, the WBC, WBA and IBF, held a meeting in Cancun, Mexico and reached an agreement to unite, cooperate and work together. In attendence included WBC president Jose Sulaiman, WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman, IBF president Marian Muhammad and WBA executive vice president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza.
Some of the issues discussed were seminars to better the level of officiating out there in title fights. Improve the efforts that prevent fighters from using performance enhancing drugs. They plan to work more with boxing commissions across the world and other organizations such as the Boxing Promoters Association of America.
"This is the next big step in the evolution of our sport. The boxing world has been waiting for real leadership, and in our unity, we are able to provide and strengthen the leadership," said IBF president Muhammad.
Meanwhile, Gilberto Mendoza said: "My expectation is that we can continue with good things and strengthen organizational relationships for the development of boxing."
Larry Hazzard of the IBF, summed it up with enthusiasm: "We have the strength in unity, some people said that the bodies may never meet and work together."
