The president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaiman, is confident that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has the level and merits to draw a sellout crowd at Azteca Stadium, which has a capacity of 87,000.

Last Saturday night, Canelo captured the WBA "regular" super middleweight title with a three round destruction of Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Mexican superstar is scheduled to fight again on May 4, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend, in Las Vegas.

Now there is talk that Canelo will fight at Azteca either in September or December of next year, as part of a major event on Mexican soil.

Canelo has not fought in Mexico since November of 2011. All of his fights since then have taken place in the United States.

"No doubt Canelo already has the level to fill in Azteca stadium. He has a very strong media platform and supported by Mexican people who like boxing. I'm sure it can be done," Sulaiman said.

"It's great [that he might fight at Azteca] and as far as we are able, we're going to support it so that it can be achieved. Mexico deserves to have that kind of activity, it has everything to do that kind of event.

"I know that for months there have been communications to Golden Boy Promotions to consider the Azteca. I do not know what progress has been made, but it is achievable, Mexico has had important fight throughout history, so I feel it is a great moment and if it's something that we can support we will do it with pleasure."

"Canelo is going through a great moment in his professional career, he won the National Award (for sports), the glory when he beat (Gennady) Golovkin, he went to Madison Square Garden, he has a great outlook for 2019, he is said to be fighting on May 4th in Las Vegas and in September it would be great to see him in Azteca."
