Boxxer expect to stage the rematch between Troy Williamson and Callum Simpson in July.

It was in December when Williamson unexpectedly inflicted the 29-year-old Simpson’s first defeat, when in a fight for Simpson’s British, Commonwealth and European titles he stopped Simpson in the 10th round.

It has since been speculated that Simpson would move up to light heavyweight, but Boxxer’s Ben Shalom insisted in January that Simpson had activated his clause for a rematch, and though further speculation followed when Williamson vacated the European title at a time when Jose Luis Navarro was his mandatory challenger, it is finally expected to proceed.

The popular Simpson has, during the previous two summers, fought at Oakwell, the stadium of his local soccer team Barnsley, and by fighting in July there exists the possibility of him doing so again. Shalom, regardless, told BoxingScene: “Simpson-Williamson was contracted a long time ago. It’s looking like July.

“That will definitely be in July. Most likely [with the BBC as broadcasters]; we’ve had one other offer for that fight. But the BBC[-Boxxer collaboration] will continue.”

Simpson, in Rob McCracken, may yet fight Williamson with a new trainer in his corner.
