In a recent interview with Primerahora , Leonard Ellerbe, manager and close friend of Floyd Mayweather Jr., questioned the worth of unbeaten WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. Mayweather defends the WBC's version of the welterweight crown on Dec. 8 against Ricky Hatton.
After Hatton, Ellerbe does not see many fighters who bring a lot to the table, in terms of a big payday for Mayweather.
"To be honest, we are not thinking about Miguel Cotto or any other fighter. Our full attention is on Ricky Hatton. Floyd has achieved things in the sport of boxing that no another athlete has been able to achieve", said Ellerbe. "From a business point of view, what does Cotto bring to the table? We have to ask ourselves if the fight make makes sense."
Cotto won a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley on Nov. 10 in New York's Madison Square Garden, placing himself at the top of the list for a crack at the Mayweather-Hatton winner.
Should Hatton win in December, most expect him to face Oscar De La Hoya in May. If Mayweather wins, few insiders are expecting him to answer the call of Cotto. Antonio Margarito, who destroyed Golden Johnson on the Cotto-Mosley undercard, may become the frontrunner to fight Cotto in 2008.
