WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) is going to push to fight the winner of the June 6th bout between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Daniel Geale.
Golovkin, who holds the WBC interim-middleweight title, is the mandatory challenger to Cotto. If Cotto wins, he is expected to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the fall. Golovkin wants to return in September and has his eye on the WBC title.
So far there is no step aside agreement in place where Cotto can make another voluntary defense.
"It's clear from the WBC, it's mandated, that the winner of Cotto and Geale has to fight Gennady next. Cotto can fight Canelo..absolutley no problem, but he can't fight for the WBC title, he can't defend the WBC title unless he has an agreement with Gennady and so far we do not have an agreement in place, so we'll see what happens. If he fights Canelo without permission, he will then vacate the title and Gennady becomes the champion which is his goal, and he'll keep defending that," said Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions.
The WBC is willing to allow Cotto vs. Canelo - if they sign a document where the winner agrees to face Golovkin next. But Golovkin is not sure he'd want to agree to that.
"If the winner agreed to fight him, and it was under the right terms - it's something we would consider. He's mandated now. If he has to wait three or four months, something to consider. He wants to fight as soon as possible, no agreement has been reached yet. If the right terms are in place it's something he'd have to consider. Its not something he would want to do because he'd rather have the title than wait," Loeffler said.
