A few weeks ago BoxingScene.com reported that a showdown between unbeaten super featherweights Adrien Broner and Eloy Perez was in the works for November 26th in Broner's hometown of Cincinnati, OH. The fight was going to be for the WBO title that Ricky Burns vacated when he decided to move up to the lightweight division.
Perez's team wasn't happy with the money being offered to face Broner in his ometown. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Lem Satterfield of ringtv.com's that Perez did not take the fight.
According to Sam Garcia, who is Perez's co-trainer, they didn't turn down the fight and negotiations were still ongoing. Garcia's father Max is the lead trainer while his mother Kathy serves as Perez's manager.
Garcia told BoxingScene.com, "It was reported on ringtv.com by Lem Satterfield that Richard Shcaeffer said Perez did not take the fight. That is not true we accepted the fight and were in process of negotiating the details when the president of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, pulled the bout and said he has other plans for Eloy."
Garcia wanted to clarify that De La Hoya has other plans for Perez and that Perez had not turned down the fight as he was frustrated with Schaefer's comment. He also said that he believes Perez and Broner will meet down the line when the fight is bigger.
"There's no doubt Eloy and Broner will meet sometime soon but the stakes will be much higher," stated Garcia.
"Golden Boy needs to get on the same page with each other. Richard Schaefer is making us look bad. I know Oscar knows who Eloy is but not sure Richard does."
