Trainer Jose "Chepo" Reynoso had a smile on his face as he heard Floyd Mayweather's boasts of being more popular than Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). Mayweather (44-0, 26KOs) recently stated that Canelo used his pay-per-view undercards to grow his fan base and become more popular with the general public. The pound-for-pound champion is not sold on Canelo's credentials of being a superstar. The two boxers just finished up a ten city tour to promoter their battle on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Reynoso says his fighter blew Mayweather away in popularity in almost every city, and even had a hefty line of fans in Mayweather's hometown.
"Even in the hometown of Floyd Mayweather Jr., in Michigan, the fans were 50-50 for each fighter. And everywhere else the percentage of fans were in favor of Saul by a 10 to 1 margin. So he swept [the tour] in popularity and that assures [our team] that on September 14th we will get the most support. That's a good sign that everyone wants Canelo to win," Reynoso said.
