Mark Vester ran a story on June 15th about Zab Judah's recent appearance on BoxingScene's radio show Leave It In The Ring Radio. Judah said, "For Devon to tell ya'll that Zab Judah don't make financial sense, that's silly. We definitely know there is a profit that he can make. He just don't want the challenge. That's what it is."
IBF/WBC junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander's manager Kevin Cunningham reached out to BoxingScene to respond to Judah's comments. "Ryan the first thing I want to make clear is that Team Alexander is 100% focused on Andriy Kotelnik. Kotelnik was the only guy that had the balls to step to the plate and sign a contract to fight Devon and for that Kotelnik will get an ass-whoopin."
Team Alexander has been calling for fights with Tim Bradley, Marcos Maidana, and Zab Judah for months on BoxingScene. All of those fights failed to come to fruition. The talks between Team Judah and his former promoter Don King failed to produce an agreement. Both parties previously had a bitter break up and the talks for this fight were less than harmonious.
"We were willing to fight Zab. He couldn't reach an agreement with Don King and he seems more interested in taking tune ups. We also wanted Tim Bradley and he moved up to welterweight so we are fighting Andriy Kotelnik. At least he had the balls to sign on the dotted line," said Cunningham.
Alexander returns to action on August 7th on HBO in St. Louis against Andriy Kotelnik. Zab Judah, who recently reunited with Main Events, returns on ESPN on July 16 versus Jose Armando Santa Cruz in New Jersey. Cunningham again stressed that Team Alexander's focus is on Kotelnik.
"Devon is focused on Kotelnik. After we get done with him we can look at fighting Zab or Bradley or whoever else has the balls to step up and fight. If Golden Boy wants to keep all their fighters in-house and HBO wants to build an Alexander-Bradley fight then why not have a doubleheader in the fall? You could have Bradley versus Zab Judah, who is a southpaw which will help Bradley get ready for Devon, and have Devon fight Humberto Soto, a three time world champion who is looking to move up in weight to try to get a fourth title."
